Perks, Preparing and Packing Right

16 meals a day no waitingOne of the perks of being a real estate agent is that no one says you can only have one week’s paid vacation a year and 3 sick days.  Since you are an independent contractor…you can take as many days as you want… or none at all if that is what you prefer.  Granted… we don’t get paid by the hour anyway…we work harder than most or we don’t get paid.

About once every 5 years…my husband and I have decided to go on the big vacation.  3 weeks in a row. I have found there is truth in the saying…nothing happens in real estate until you go out of town.  It happens every time…so, just be prepared.  Have your back up systems in place, and trusted agent(s) who can step in for you.  Where we go…internet is not an option always…and I cannot show that house when I am in another country.  I always try to have 2 people to back me up just in case one is sick or busy.  We do keep crazy schedules!

Just as when you travel…be prepared.  Don’t put all your clothes in one suitcase if you have to check your bag and have a connection.  And just don’t throw a tag on it at the airport.  We had a bag go missing on this trip.  If we had not gotten it back, we would not be happy vacationers as they say.  But being seasoned travelers…we were prepared.  Tag your bag from inside, twice on the outside.  Should the airport tag fall off…you have a fighting chance to get it back.   Plus remember the brand and size of the bag.  Tuck a business card or 2 or 3 inside every suitcase…

Luggage MessAirlines have huge quantities of bags with no identification on them.  It a black bag.  If you ever notice the bags going around the baggage conveyor belt…95% are black.  You need more info than it’s black and has the multi colored ribbon or yarn concoction you have tied to the handle. Ours is the large black one

Airport terminal will typically only hang onto a bag 5 days,  and then it is shipped to the airlines warehouse in usually another state. Typically they hold for 90 days, and then they “dispose” of it. (They sell it!)

Infact, there are over 1 million items a year that are never returned to their owners. Chances are the items “made it’s way” to the Unclaimed Baggage Center located at 509 West Willow Street, in Scottsboro, Alabama .  They have a 40,000 square foot store that sells what has been recovered in lost luggage. That’s right….they typically are the ones that buy the lost luggage and resale it.  Might be the place to go on your next trip to find some bargains!
