What the Heck is Halloween, Anyway ?

By

Happy Halloween!  Yeppers... it's Halloween.  There are many really cute posts floating around on Active Rain over the past few days.

So... what is this Halloween thing, anyway?

Lots of porch and front yard home decorations, lots of really cute little kids with their Halloween costumes on, and even a brand new Profile Picture of Anna Banana Kruchten with her new blonde hair-do.  How absolutely and cool'ly festive!

Let's start with the name.  Happy Halloween. ---> Hallow'een. ---> Hallow Eve ---> All Hallows Eve.

Hallow, and Hallowed means holy or sacred... as in "Hallowed be Thy Name" in the prayer "The Our Father.  Or "hallow this ground" in the Gettysburg address.

Thursday, November 1st is the Catholic Feast of All Saints.  Saints are "holy."  Saints are "hallowed.  One could call All Saints day... a remembrance and/or celebration of all the "saints"... of all those who are holy, or of those who are "All Hallowed."

Thus... Wednesday, tonight, Oct 31... is the Eve of All Saints day... which becomes All Hallowed or All Hallows Eve... which becomes Hallow'een.

Happy Halloween!

Well, come on, Miss Mona.  When you were a little girl, and when you went out Trick or Treating... what were some of YOUR favorite costumes that you wore... or wanted to wear?

Sussie, I have some ideas about how the spooky stuff got in, but not sure.  But... your questions gives me a good reason to go find out.  Thanks so much.  Ahhh... love that motivation!

Karen Anne ~> now that's not what my parents taught me? They said Halloween is getting all the candy you can to bring home to share with your parents because they are too old to trick or treat....

Michael:  I am guessing that means either Day of the Dead, or God of the Dead.  Not sure which.  But November 2nd... the day after All Saints Day... is All Souls Day.  Those poor folks who weren't good enough to be Saints, I guess.

And... ya cannot just be Sister Holy Water.  There has to be a "Mary" in there first... at least as I remember.  So, you may call me Sister Mary Holy Water... thank you very much!

Andrea:  Well... Happy Birthday to Husby.  Lucky him.  In my opinion, he already HAS the bestest Birthday Present he could ever have... YOU... and the girls.

Now, I can just see you with the candy... munching away... deciding what to keep, what to totally eat yourself, and what to toss.  A lousy job, but somebody's gotta do it.  I envy you... a Birthday/Halloween night spent with Husby and the kids.

Frank & Karen:  Well... you need to remember that parents are always right.  LOL.  Just fill your bags and stuff with the candy, and take it home so Mom and Dad can "test it" for you... kinda like Andrea did in her comment and my reply.  It's just one more of the personal sacrifices we make as parents... LOL.  Love those sugar-induced comas.

Karen Anne, thanks for sharing that very nice trivia about Halloween.  It's also a great time to spend some good quality bonding with family and friends.

Well, Karen Anne, Halloween is also the night that the vail between the living and the dead is beleived to be at it's thinest, and it is at that time we can more readily communicate with those who have passed.  This can be good or not so good, hense the "spooky" stuff.  It is my pleasure to say that it is also Wiccan's New Year.  So Happy New Year and Blessed Be.

Now we are only 3 weeks away from Thanksgiving. I have a trip planned, so I'm counting the days. I love this time of year...it seems we have a new holiday to celebrate every few weeks or so. Than in January it's just winter again and it's a long time until that next school break and spring.

BTW...congratulations on your last feature.

I love Halloween and am looking forward to the little trick or treaters....our celebration was postponed until Friday evening.  My last home didn't receive any trick or treat traffic and I really missed it.  Eight years later I'm about to give out candy again and I can't wait!

I hope your Halloween was full of treats and not tricks. My ragamuffin wouldn't slow down enough to really enjoy the day, but he did keep up with his pleasantries and nice neighbors handed him tons of candy.

Aw, Come on, Sister Mary Elephant

(Was that Cheech and Chong, in the late 1960s or early 1970s?...can't remember as it's all a smokey haze to me)

I've been told that Halloween is to be avoided at all costs, as it's Satanic Devil Worship, and Pentacles and things ...Remember, I live in Arizona)

(speaking of Pentacles, aren't there 50 of those on our national flag? Hmmmm)

Thanks for educating the great unwashed masses who missed having Parochial Education forced upon them.

Good Morning Karen Anne,

I do not celebrate Halloween...never did, never will.  that said, you draw an interesting contrast, between what's really important, 'Hallowed' and Halloween.  I think the subtlety of this interesting.   Most people may no realize that there is more to it than just costumes

We only had 15 trick or treaters this year.  Every year it's less and less.  I do enjoy seeing the kids in their costumes.  They sure light up when you make a comment on what they're wearing!

Us Catholic school girls know all about the Holy Days of Obligation (bet you haven't heard that in a long time) and the meaning of holy days and days before and after.  You can bet your Baltimore Catechism on that.
