Halloween in Gananoque was fantastic even though we worried about the weather . . .
We had a wee bit of drizzle but nothing to dampen anyone's spirit!
Two of my brothers (in their 5o's) came out for the festivities and helped alert us to the herds of children heading our way and helping to hand out goodie bags -
I think they had more fun than the kids - once a kid, always a kid!!
We ended up handing out over 125 goodie bags filled with Cheetos, chocolate bars, gum, suckers, rockets, kisses, tootsie rolls and gold fish!
One of our neighbours always gives out pop which the kids really appreciate. (even though they're not to eat or drink anything til they get home and parents can check the loot!)
My Mother loves to sit at the door and greet each child . . .
And it is wonderful to hear many of children commenting about her . . .
"I hope the old pumpkin lady is there this year", I heard one child say.
And another let a squeal out and shouted,
"she's there, she's there!"
We had her bundled up and moved her 2nd favourite chair out to the doorway to make it easier for her to greet over 100 little monsters and their parents too!
Many of the parents made a point of telling her how much the kids talked about coming to this particular house and that it wasn't all about the goodie bag!!!
What I couldn't get over was how nice and polite these little trick-or-treaters were. In my day, we wouldn't have dreamed of it (yes we were an evil generation!)
To the child, we were wished a "Happy Halloween", (one wished us a Merry Christmas and another Happy Holidays and they were mortified!)
We were thanked for each goodie bag, many many of the children thanked us for, or complimented us on, our 'scary house'.
For all we hear about children feeling entitled and ungrateful, we surely saw none of it last night!
At the end of the night my Mother's final comment was priceless. She said, "I know that cost a lot for all that candy but look at how happy all those children were!"
See you all next year Gananoque kids (big and little) !!!
