Gray is the New Green
Many baby boomers who lead active, healthy lives and enjoy the benefits of that lifestyle, tend to be eco-minded too. We are seeing a trend among people in that age group make choices about how they lead their lives: the active boomers lifestyles are contributing directly to the environmental well-being of the planet. In other words, Gray is Green.
How can that be?
- Many boomers are down-sizing into smaller, more energy-efficient homes
- Many boomers plan to stay in their homes, live independently, and stayi active
- Many boomers have healthy eating habits – buying local organic produce and meats, where available
- Many boomers are staying active – walking, running and biking
The gray is green movement helps the environment:
- Obviously, smaller, energy-efficient homes rely less on fossil fuels and non-renewable energy sources
- Living independently means we staying in homes longer and support the healthy amenities in communities like walking trails, open spaces and parks. (This also contributes to our healthcare system – by not relying on it as much – but that’s another story…)
- Healthy eating habits, like organic and local food, means relying less on pesticide-laced food that is shipped from miles away
- Walking and biking means leaving the car at home more often
So maybe you’re saying “What’s the big deal?” – it’s just the trend among all ages – living healthy life styles, buying local, and trying to use less energy. From using mass transit to eating healthy foods, these habits rely less on energy-intensive systems for lifestyles. That may be the case, and it’s a good trend. But as the largest identifiable demographic in this country, boomers have a major economic – and environmental – impact on the country as a whole.
It is a trend worth noting, and supporting, with home design and other housing related concepts and products. Many aging boomers plan to lead active EcoLifestyles, because gray is the new green.
