Getting your Home ready for Winter

Golf Village:Living it. . .Loving it. . .Selling it! Unfortunately, it is that time of year again. We changed our clocks back to Eastern Standard Time over the weekend, were able to sleep one more hour and now have a beautiful sun shiny day to get some work done on the outside of our homes. As a real estate agent I know that this is a great time to prepare your home for winter. Since most of the leaves are down and a windstorm has blown through, this is a great time to get the final leaf clean up accomplished. If the leaves are not raked, or chopped up very small at a minimum, they could possibly make bare spots in the lawn in the spring. The grass would be covered and sunlight would not penetrate and allow the grass to grow next spring. The leaves in gardens and flower beds can add an extra layer of insulation to the plants there, but will need to be raked early in the spring so that the green sprouts can grow in the sunlight. Any screens that can be replaced with a storm window should be removed at this time. It is so nice to get a breeze through your home when the front door is left open and the storm door has a screen. Chances are, with the weather in Powell, Ohio the next couple months , we won't want to have our doors open. Replace that screen with a window for a little extra insulation. If you have any outdoor spigots that do not have an insulated bib, make sure you take your hoses inside and turn off the water to the spigot. Frozen pipes and hoses are not something you will want to deal with in January or February. Many trees and shrubs prefer being trimmed in the fall rather than the spring. Check with your local garden center about your specific types of plants for the best information on pruning and trimming. If you plan on selling your home in the winter or spring, take a walk around the outside of your home and see if you notice any falling downspouts, peeling or fading paint on the trim. Take a look at your home as if you were a buyer and seeing it for the first time. Notice the little things that may need some attention. This is a great time to have those items addressed so that they are not issues when you list your home in the mls. Spending a little time now on the exterior of your home, can save a lot of time on the exterior in the spring. Consider it a great way to enjoy these waning days of fall outside in the sunshine!
