My father has been hospital bed ridden for 11 years, and my mother provides nearly all of his non-medical care. While my sisters and I try to contribute and relieve the burden from her, we really are limited by our own family and job demands. Care giving can be very stressful physically and emotionally, and, for my mother, the level of responsibility is so great that she won’t allow herself so much as a short vacation.
November is National Family Caregivers Month and its purpose is to draw attention to the many challenges facing family caregivers.
If you know a caregiver, please let them know that you appreciate what they do. Let them vent their frustrations to you, or buy them a cup of tea on the especially challenging days. Give them a hug, or a potted plant, or a dozen homemade cookies.
