While my sister, Gloria, was in town visiting a first time in awhile, the two of us meandered down to Old Sacramento, on a pleasantly warm sunny day. While standing in front of O’Grady’s Old Time Photos, we lamented there had never been a formal picture taken of us together. It was time! Within a heartbeat we found our feet crossing the threshold and stepping into the studio.
Over the years, I had experienced a love-hate relationship with this type of photography. I had always thought of it as whacky, but cute. Then seeing it as a little passé and ridiculous. I ultimately came full circle, while watching the proprietor slip the hooped skirt over my head, anchoring it to my waist while it dangled to the floor. It is amazing the places you find yourself, when things are done with little thought and spur of the moment.
I also learned a big secret of the vintage costumes for these photographic events. They are virtually backless. They tie in the rear to facilitate a “one size fits all” construction. My sister had to remind me of this at least once, while I stood in front of the counter, with my bare backside staring at the street through the studio doorJ
When I gaze at the finished product, I am stunned to find personalities of my sister and I remain intact. My sister with bible in hand expressing her spiritual nature, and me with a “deer in the headlights” expression, usually demonstrated during events like thisJ
