How Would You have Looked 150 Years Ago?

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

While my sister, Gloria, was in town visiting a first time in awhile, the two of us meandered down to Old Sacramento, on a pleasantly warm sunny day.  While standing in front of O’Grady’s Old Time Photos, we lamented there had never been a formal picture taken of us together.  It was time!  Within a heartbeat we found our feet crossing the threshold and stepping into the studio.

Over the years, I had experienced a love-hate relationship with this type of photography.  I had always thought of it as whacky, but cute.  Then seeing it as a little passé and ridiculous.  I ultimately came full circle, while watching the proprietor slip the hooped skirt over my head, anchoring it to my waist while it dangled to the floor.  It is amazing the places you find yourself, when things are done with little thought and spur of the moment.

I also learned a big secret of the vintage costumes for these photographic events.  They are virtually backless.  They tie in the rear to facilitate a “one size fits all” construction.  My sister had to remind me of this at least once, while I stood in front of the counter, with my bare backside staring at the street through the studio door

When I gaze at the finished product, I am stunned to find personalities of my sister and I remain intact.  My sister with bible in hand expressing her spiritual nature, and me with a “deer in the headlights” expression, usually demonstrated during events like thisJ

O’Grady’s is located at: 1026 2nd Street, Sacramento.  Their phone number is  (916) 446-4242

Steve - The photographer was great, and I was impressed after the posing, while watchomg her use the Darkroom software to edit a few little details in the pictures.

Endre - It really was a fun experience.  It wasn't one occupying space on my Bucket List.  It was more about crossing off an event that everyone seems to need do at least once:-)

Fred - A couple years ago, I was in Amish Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  I had an opportunity to dress Amish for one of these types of pictures.  I've regretted that I didn't.

Andrea - I think you are right!

Tom - The serendipity of it all, added to the experience:-)

Debbie - I don't know how the gold rush era ladies handled living in that type of clothing.  All that fluff makes you look at least 20 pounds heavier:-)   And when you consider the dirt streets, and other conditions, you wonder if they weren't doing laundry 24/7.  I'm fairly certain I would have been a whole lot crankier back then:-)

Good morning Myrl. I love the picture and your writing is wonderful. I agree that the picture probably does capture the spirits you and your sister have. In a hundred years your heirs may wonder what time period you actually did live in.

Sheila - On that particular day, my hair was a little straighter, and I was wearing no makeup.  I didn't even have a tube of lipstick with me.  I was slightly hesitant about the picture taking because of it.  That's the second time in recent months someone had snapped my photo without it.  I'm use to being behind the camera, rather than in front of it.  I have learned to let my guard down. . .I need to work on that. . .tsk, tsk!

Steve - We look like we are on vacation!  I look like a horse that has been rode hard and put away wet:-)

Tony and Darcy - Those were tough times.  Had I actually lived 'em, I'd probably be in a lot better shape too.  At least if I had managed to dodge cholera, small pox, plague, etc.

Yolanda - I am having a really great week.  But last week when my sister was here, it was even better!

Karen - I thought the photographer did an outstanding job with the costumes, the props, posing us, and everything.  She was very professional!

Elizabeth - You know me.  No casual outting ever goes as planned. . .tsk, tsk!  I'm still licking my wounds after telling that biker that he needed to move his Harley before it became a bumper sticker on "your" car. . .LOL   My sister is 12 years older than I.  She was the good sister, who colored inside the lines.  I was always looking for space outside the lines to create my own artistic compositions.  But, we are close and love each other very much!
