Our Baby Elephant Died and I Am So Sad.....

Our Baby Elephant Died....I am so Sad.

About three weeks ago we chose to foster a baby elephant. His name was Rukinga and was rescued when he was about three weeks old.

When he was found, there was no evidence of any wild elephants remaining in the area, and he had obviously been alone for some time as his ears were becoming tender and sun burnt.

The scouts monitored him for a further three hours to be sure that his herd or mother was not going to return. In this time it was evident the calf was desperate for company, joining a herd of cattle that had come in to water.

He was only a few weeks old with the dried remnants of his umbilical cord still showing on his underside. Given the increase in poaching in this area it is possible his mother was poached as elephants rarely leave their young.

Rukinga being transported to the refuge:

Rukinga's flight to the Nursery:

Rukinga receiving some nourishment:

We were notified today that Rukinga had died during the teething process which is a very difficult time for baby elephants in captivity.

Baby elephants cut their molars between the age of 1 - 4 months and have an easy process of it in the wild but not so in captivity. They don't know why but they are very susceptible to infection during this process in captivity. The milk formula received in captivity in place of their mother's milk may be a key.

After telling us the measures that were taken to save Rukinga, the email ended like this:

"And so, the earthly remains of precious baby Rukinga, who died at dusk amidst the tears of his adopted human family, breathed his last as darkness took hold. He was deeply loved and is deeply mourned, not only by us but by all his foster parents who supported and loved him in life and so wanted him to live.

But, it was not to be. He now rests in peace alongside many others who have not made it, within the tranquility of the quiet forest environment of Nairobi National Park. We are sure that his spirit will now be reunited with that of his beautiful Elephant Mother. Somewhere in the Great Somewhere because even here on earth he was so very angelic. Following grief, the page has to be turned, for there will be many others in need of help and care, and we all have to be there for them as well. "

We will be fostering another baby elephant soon and will keep you posted. If you are interested in the Fostering Program for Orphaned Elephants please check out:

I started to cry when I got the email Roger.

We already have our eye on a new foster Cheryl. It helps to look forward instead of thinking about Rukinga.

Oh don't even get me started about poachers Richard!

I am sorry Terri...I didn't mean to ruin your morning. I was just feeling so sad and wanted to 'get it off my chest' so to speak.

Lisa, I know he was loved during his short time at the Refuge in his nursery with other elephants. I saw pictures of him with his blankie and being loved.

Agree totally Kristine. I saw a segment on the news years ago about poachers and they slit the elephant's backs down the spine, dug out their tusks etc. I sobbed and sobbed.

They think poachers killed her Valerie, then left the baby since it didn't have anything of value yet with no tusks for ivory. Breaks my heart that he still had his umbilical cord attached to him.

I know Kathy. The little guy had to have been so scared and it is kind of cute he hung out with cattle for awhile as elephants are very social/family animals.

Shar - How very, very sad.  I love the paragraph you included from the letter you received.  Such a lovely tribute to this little elephant.

We have had sad news here.  Three giraffes have died in only one year here at the zoo.  I do wish they would do away with zoos all together - so cruel.  Apparently, the giraffes don't have enough body fat for our cold temperatures.  Duh!

Oh Shar, what a beautiful creature and it is so sad.  The letter you received was lovely and it was a beautiful tribute.  The poaching continues and the suffering goes on.

Duh is right Sally. That is horrible. African animals in Canada a good idea? We have them here in MN too but they are taken inside during the winter months. Can't be fun for them though.

Ugh, I know Joanna. And people still continue to buy ivory. It is illegal in the US but not in most countries.

Howdy Shar!  We recently lost our beagle Woof.   The words that comforted me weren't particularly spiritual, but it helped:

"Energy can neither be created, nor destroyed"

Ruckinga's energy now dances in the universe...

Thank you Tom, that is sweet.

Thank you Kathy for the feature in your weekly post. I learn so much from those with the things I have missed so I am honored to be a part of it.

Oh how very, very sad. I think elephants are wonderful animals and we should protect them. I often wonder why we don't bring a herd over to the US and let them roam free in a wilderness area. I am thinking it is because there are no non-human wilderness areas where they can survive year round. Also I don't think there is any like food here that they would eat.

Shar - this was almost certainly the result of poaching.  The most recent National Geographic has an article about African elephant poaching.  If you were to have asked me how many elephants are poached yearly, I would have guessed around 1000.  Wrong - it's 25,000!  They can't sustain that kind of slaughter and it's all about ivory - stupid ivory.

I am sorry Sheila. I know what an animal lover you are like me. I was crushed when I received this email as I just wasn't expecting it so suddenly after Rukinga finally was getting food and love.

That was sweet of Kathy to do, thank you for stopping by Kristin.

Yes, I suppose there are numerous reasons Sussie. Space and money being the biggest two. If they could just stop the import of ivory in every country the demand would stop the money hungry poachers.

It is hard to see these beautiful gentle creatures suffer for such a stupid reason Richard and Beth. Thanks for reading it with such great care.

That breaks my heart Margaret. If every country would make ivory illegal the poachers can't make money. Simple.

I would foster them all if I could Jan! :)

I will never understand how humans can be so mercenary and crewel to our precious wild animals. So sad.

Oh, how sad. I so didn't need to hear this... made me cry. At least they did all they could for this baby and at least he didn't die alone.

Shar, very sad but beautifully written and captures the blend between natures love and humans. I believe they all did their best...even the baby elephant.

Ouch!  This post hurts my soul to think that poachers might have caused Rukinka to be abandoned.  The pictures tell a very tender love story.  Unfortunately it had a very sad ending.  Thanks for posting the update.
