Ok so I received by brand new Moleskine smart notebook today. Like any self-respecting techie, I immediately tore off the plastic cover and began playing with my new "toy".
So... I made a note in the notebook. I wrote in print and in cursive to see if the evernote system would be able to figure out my terrible hand-writing. Did it need to be perfect or could I just scrawl as normal? I put a sticker on the front, identifying the note as work-related, and took a picture with my evernote app on my iPhone.
Did the note show up in evernote?
Yes.
Was it searchable?
No.
Uh-oh... what'd I miss?
Turning to the evernote live chat feature, they kindly sent me a link to the evernote moleskine guide... a very handy little tool. In this guide I learned a few things:
- You must first turn ON the evernote page camera. It is defaulted to OFF. This page camera is what makes the difference between a photo note and a searchable text note. BIG difference...
- The page camera is ONLY available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Android and others will be available in the future.
- A flash and higher resolution are helpful so iPhone 4 and up or iPad 3 is necessary. I have the 4s and the iPad 3 so I'm good there.
- The stickers have tags already assigned but you CAN change those in your evernote device app prior to clicking a page camera picture.
Okay so Take 2... I turned on the page camera and snapped another picture. This is what you'll see:
You can delete tags here by clicking the "x" next to each one or delete the photo and try again or click the blue check mark to accept and move on.
Once accepted, I went to evernote on my laptop to view and try searching for text in my note. Was the note already in my laptop from my iPhone? Yes it was... :-)
I first checked the tag by clicking the "work" tag. This is what came up:
Perfect!
Now I checked for printed text by typing "problems" into the search field:
Next I tried searching for my scribbly cursive writing. Would it be able to decipher the word "stressed"?
Oh yes it did!! :-)
The smart notebook is a complete success and a genius idea out of moleskine and evernote. It's so much easier to jot things down than it is to type them all into an app but the thing is, I hate going through pages and pages of scribble trying to figure out where I wrote something in a notebook. This just solves all thse issues by allowing you to handwrite in a book you can easily carry in the palm of your hand and then also easily search the text and tag it. Wow... Think of the possibilities...
