Veterans Day has held a special place in my heart- long before I ever became a veteran myself. Call it old-fashioned, "old school" or whatever you choose to call it, but I've always had a profound respect for member of our military (and folks I've proudly called my fellow veterans for the past 17 years now). I pray that will forever remain so.

The photos above are two that I took when I visited the World War II Memorial a few years back- to honor my paternal grandfather, 1st Lt. William G. McEachern, 136th Texas National Guard, Bronze Star, Silver Star and 2x Purple Heart recipient from the Battle of San Pietro and the fight to take the Rapido River in 1944.

Each star in my photo represents 100 American men and from World War II who were either killed in action or remain missing from it. The 405,399 men lost in the war are rivalled only by the 620,000 men whose lives were lost in The War Between the States that was anything but civil.

This weekend, please share this post and information with any veterans you feel may benefit from it- or better yet, find a veteran who might otherwise eat alone and have a meal with 'em- you never know what you can learn from a hero.

Dennis, I cannot understand how anyone, anywhere, would not constantly be honoring our veterans... honoring those who have sacrificed much in keeping us free.  I don't understand how anyone could consider it "old school."  If they do, I think they went to the wrong school... and need to re-do their homework.  Thanks for a great post.

Hi, Carolyn:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment and sentiment.  The stark contrast between folks who love the military and folks who are indifferent or blatantly anti-military continues to amaze.  A growing segment of our country has no ties to military service whatsoever- as the WWI generation is all but gone and the WWII heroes fade away, many will have no living relatives who have ever served.  That's troubling- but I'm admittedly biased having served in the Navy myself, having both a WWI and WWII grandfathers and a 36-year Air Force Lieutenant General whose service stretched from Korea into the Reagan Administration (he was in the Army Air Corps before the Air Force was the Air Force, of course).

It's up to those of us who love the military to show and remind others that service means something.  The paltry 3% of us that have ever served truly make sacrifices many will never understand- and the more folkd that appreciate it, the better.
