Take a side trip from the road to Hana and drive into the village of Keanae for a glimpse of the real "old Hawaii" that still exists in some corners of Maui.   This area is known for traditional taro farming with fresh mountain stream water running through the paddies or loi.

The natural beauty here is superb!  The shoreline is rugged, with black volcanic lava rocks jumbled together.  Waves crash on the rocks.  Coconut palms abound.

The Lanakila Ihiihi O Iehova Ona Kaua Church is a beautiful old stone church that was established in 1860.  It was the only building in this area to survive the devastating tsunami of April 1, 1946.

This historic church is open to the public every day, with worship service on Sundays.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

What else is there to do in Keanae?  There are a couple of fruit stands where you can grab a lunch or snack.  You can wander along the shoreline and look for shells or take pictures.  When the sea is calm you can swim or snorkel.

Hi Goergina, That first photo looks as if it were taken during the war time in the 50's. Love it!

This is such a well written post and beautiful photos. I love the unique architecture; the combination of wood and stone.
