Visualizing Data

I'd guess that almost all of us had had our fill of politics for a while. I know I'm done for the foreseeable future, which is why I almost skipped over a really interesting article on different ways to visually present the recent election results.

But I'm glad I clicked on University of Michigan physics professor Mark Newman's post about election maps - using tools from his studies of complex systems, he provides different ways to visualize the election results, and his maps are both revealing and thought-provoking.

We're all familiar with the basic election results map:

But here's the same information in a cartogram, adjusted by making the size of the states proportional to their population:

Interesting, right?

His post goes on to provide several additional maps which offer more context for the same basic information, all of which give us different perspectives on a particular moment in our history. It's a short post (and it really isn't about politics) - if you have time, check it out.

Great visual Dick, it is a much better representation than the "normal" map.

Hi Dick, I saw a map done county by county and the density in metropolitan areas which have higher populations. Interestingly they form a solid border around the country. It would seem to me that instead of polls, this is where to check on how people are actually voting. Also of interest , it is not likely to change since this is also where the jobs are.

Dick,

Very interesting post and a great illustration on the nature of psycho-graphics.  And I like the purple colors idea, very creative.   I am  with you on the subject of politics, which should be about finding an innovative solution to the problems we face.  We certainly have brilliant minds in our country, we just don't elect them, or they are too smart to run.

As a fellow gourmet, I just wrote a post about caviar lime.  Did you know about it?  I was totally blown away by it!  Wishing you and Mary a delightful weeekend, and sunrises keep us from firing our cats.  A

I always love a good visual!  It takes the confusion out of the visual disproportion of the geographical map that we have all been viewing.  I knew our part of the world wasn't very populated.... but jeez, this shrinks Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota and Nebraska (all together) down to 1/5 the size of California and this is probably still being too generous! LOL

Dick, It is very interesting indeed seeing it presented this way. It tells a whole lot about where the people live and the electorate.

Well the way I see it...numbers don't lie. I think that is an interesting concept considering the outcome.

Hi Dick -- love this map, I saw the map that William Johnson mentioned in his comment(#2) and this definitely puts some things in perspective.

I like this perspective Dick. You are an interesting guy and always find cool stuff to share with the rest of us. So, thanks for that. Ya gotta wonder why this isn't seen during election coverage?  Go figure, right?
