The Chelatchie Praire Railroad - The Wine Run 11/24/12

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

Chelatchie Prairie RailroadFull Steam ahead for the final wine run of the season with the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad. The train departs the Yacolt station at 1PM on Saturday, November 24th for a ride over the recently restored trestle and the back-country of Clark County - literally over the river and through the woods.

The Wine Run takes you on a 10 mile loop from Yacolt to Lucia. The Wine RunYou’ll see the Lewis River from a cliff-side vantage point and experience the darkness of a 350 foot tunnel carved out of solid rock. If you’re lucky, you might spot some wildlife along the route - such as a family of deer.

The 1941 Alco Diesel train stops at Moulton Falls Juction where you’ll warm up in the tasting room.  Inside, there’s $5 wine tasting, music, food and other items for purchase with certain proceeds supporting the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Fund to bring a steam engine to the line.

The Wine RunBe sure to arrive 30 minutes before departure to allow sufficient time to pick up your tickets and climb aboard the train. Tickets are 15 for adults, 14 for seniors (60+), and $8-$10 for youngsters.  Children under two are free. Visit The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad website to purchase tickets online.

Recently, I feel under the spell of a the SP 4449, a historic steam engine that makes its home in Portland, OR. It would be great to have steam engine running on tracks in North Clark County, WA too. You can further the cause on Saturday, November 24th, 2012 by taking  a ride on The Wine Run with The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad.

If you enjoy trains, here’s a short excursion featuring the SP 4449 - Portland to Bend Run - October 20-21, 2012.  Romancing a Train.

Debb, shucks, would have LOVED to experience this -- both the train and the wine tasting!    Bet that route is full of beauty, and charm!

Debb- now that sounds like something I'd love to do.  I haven't been on a train in years and this would be the way to do it.

Joan, indeed you would love this - wine and a train ride through natural beauty - can't beat it.

Hi Kathy - agree. The views alone are worth the 15 dollars.

Hi Debb - From when I was a little kid on those tiny kiddie trains until now, I've always loved riding trains, especially the old ones. We have several scenic trains here, but none paired with wine tasting, which would be a real treat.

Debb... You knock me out! Great local post and what a cool video! True, they don't write songs about trains anymore. You got some fabulous shots! When we were kids we'd take a trip in the summer with Mom to our Grandparents in Spokane. What a treat it was.

Debb: A cool train ride and wine tasting add up to a fun outing through the back-country of Clark County.

Debb, after seeing your Rum Run, I was thinking WOW, this is ALOT of running for alcohol! Then, I realized you mean a TRAIN....duh. Well, gosh, anything with wine will suit me to a "T", even if it involves a "T-rain"....but, I like your thinking...running OR riding--okay by me!!

Debb-Everything goes better with wine. LOL. And a great way to have a nice ride through the country and see some of the amazing sites.

Debb, Even without the wine tasting the train ride would be a joyful excursion across the hills. Train rides are so nostalgic.

Debb,

This sounds like great fun.  When we lived in Napa, we had the wine train...for some reason or other, we did not take it..LOL A

Dick, we're going - sis and her husband - my parents - and myself and my husband. What I really want to to is support the efforts to get a steam engine on the tracks. ( As you know, I do like steam engines).  And, wine. Lol.

Rene - I think most of us have memories of a train ride as a kid. Mine was in Alaska to Denali Park. I don't remember too much, but my sister shares her memories - which in turn, become mine.

Anita, indeed it is a cool option for something to do that's a bit off the beaten track. :)

Gayle, did you think an intervention was in order? Ha ha.

Adrian - seems like a perfect post Thanksgiving outing to me.

Debb,

There is something about old trains that seems to fascinate us. Nice post. :)
