Veterans Day has always been a day of reverance for me, the daughter of a proud Marine Corps Veteran and survivor of the Korean War. More recently, my son joined the ranks of revered veterans for his National Guard deployment to active duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom. To dad, Dallas, and all the other proud vets, THANK YOU for your willingness, sacrifice and service to protecting and maintaining the ideals we hold so dear.
Here's a post I wrote previously recognizing my late father, and the work he did during his life on bahalf of veterans in our community. A Veteran's Day Tribute ~ Semper Fi
This morning my sister Kerri sent a note with a couple of photos attached. Last night she had the oportunity to attend our local Marine Corps Ball. She likes to attend because "there are still so many of Dad's old Marine pals to hug on."
As Kerri perused the table of silent auction items, she came upon an enlarged photo of the Epic Battle of Chosin Reservoir, of which our dad is a survivor. The photo had several signatures on it, and she says she had to catch her breath when she saw there in the corner, our dad's signarture, Cpl Ron Rankin! She bid on the photo but it went "way higher than my puny pocketbook."
Later, one of the Marines who also had signed the photo, approached Kerri to tell her that he had seen her bid on the picture, and not to worry, he had several copies and one of them was for her.
Semper fi.
