Flight - Did The Trailer Misrepresent The Movie?

Filight -  did the trailer misrepresent the movie?

No spoiler alerts here so feel free to read on. My husband and I walked out of the movie thinking it was an Academy award winning film.  "Epic" in terms of sharing the inside struggles of alcohol and drug abuse victims.   A powerful movie with 21st century "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" scenes.

Yes, I used the term victim, because people who deal with alcoholism have a disease.  The disease can be treated and if left unchecked it will be fatal.  The worst thing about alcoholism and drug addiction is that not only can the person with the disease kill themselves, they can also take the lives of innocent victims.

That being said let's look at the movie… Denzel Washington showed all his stuff!  One "moon shot" for those who are timid about nudity but that is it for Denzel! The actor has set a new bar in his ability to act and draw the audience into the character he is playing.  This movie, Denzel Washington, the cast and crew of "Flight" will be sweeping the Academy Awards in 2013.

Watch the trailer again for clues as to the content of the movie……. this is NOT an action film. Vodka s Flight........ Academy Award Winner?

There is a powerful social message on the big screen delving into things that touch most human beings in the world today.  Images of your friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances will become alive as you are watching. You will be casting your own version of this movie with people you know and care about.

A lengthy debate arose last week with a friend on facebook about how he did not like the film.  As we talked I realized his expectations from the trailer and Denzel Washington was an action thriller film and that is not, what the movie delivers.  My friend was offended by the first scene with full frontal nudity and it went down hill for him from there.  Spoiler alert….there is only about 3 minutes of nudity at the beginning of the film, then the movie sends us to many haunting social messages.   Realize it's coming and wait for it…. the  film message that will move you one way or another.

Many film makers and screen writers do have a specific agenda to make a statement about society and modify the way people think with their artistic creativity.  I believe this movie does that if you are someone looking to improve the judgmental way you think about those around you, this movie is for you.

Screen writer John Gatins and  "Cast Away" director Robert Zemeckis touch our emotions with many provocative themes:

  • Marriage
  • Family relationships
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Co-dependency
  • Honesty
  • Cancer
  • Fear of flying
  • Ethics
  • Cover-ups
  • Corporate Fraud
  • Recovery

Walk the ethical tight rope with Denzel Washington, Captian Whip Whitaker and co-star Kelly Reilly, Nicole a recovering junkie, as their lives intertwine and their addictions drive their actions.    John Goodman, a Dr. Feelgood character, Harling, is the stand up friend that will take care of everything and makes us laugh at situations that happen every day in the real world.

Movie watching is an interesting sport. Sometimes you go to be entertained and just laugh and sometimes you end up reflecting on who you are.  Director, Robert Zemeckis, keeps us processing here just like he did in Cast Away.

Memorable lines in a favorite movie create valuable content for social gatherings.  Important memorable line in Flight,  "Have I reached my life long limit of lies?  With just one more lie……"  There are so many people living lies the line is destined to be a classic.  See the movie to connect the dots to learn something about people and life in the 21st century.

Questions from the movie…. will you fly again?

Should pilots take breathalyzer or drug tests before starting that engine?

What difference will this film make in the way you see life, engage with your friends?

The movie ends with asking "Who Are you?

Denzel Washington, cast and crew will be taking home Academy Awards in 2013 for"Flight."

What did you think?  Did the trailer misreprsent the film "Flight?"

Carra, well I gave this a hearty don't see the movie as it is a bait and switch, action to recovery movie. Very disappointed in the standard genre of Denzel from Crimson Tide and Philadelphia, for inspiring pieces and honor. The trailer got you excited I agree from an action movie which it was not. Totally too much unnecessary profanity and nudity written into the movie which you could never figure out from the trailer as there is no warning about that. On the plus side, Denzel's acting was superb.

When people say they always like to watch Denzel Washington movies, that is me. This is not one of them. That is why you are so surprised. Felt double crossed.

I heard it was not an action flick and flying was just a small part - not a disaster type movie.  It sounds interesting.  I hate being led to think a movie is about one thing and then find out it is about another.  On the other hand that twist is sometimes part of the emotion of the movie.  Just like the characters in the movie we are jerked from one frame of reference to another.  Two I can think of are "The Crying Game" and the other "Million Dollar Baby"

Carra -- thank you for letting us know that this movie is NOT what the trailers may lead one to expect.  That is one of the drawbacks of trailers (IMHO) that they grab some of the best shots and smoosh them together in 30 seconds (which would not be long enough to really sell a movie on a topic like this.)

Gary ~  So great to have your input on the trailer and the misrepresentation.  I think there is a big lesson here from all types of advertising..... we can't always believe the sound bytes we get to be what we will receive.  Interesting you use the term "double crossed."  That makes me think about "type casting" that we have become accustomed to.. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold S... we expect them to do "action films"... Think about the diversity in acting ability for Woody Harrelson.. from Cheers, to Vegas to, 7 Psychopaths.... you name it he has been in it with different characters.

My first sense of disappointment in an actor was when Lloyd Bridges did something other than Sea Hunt.. I just could NOT watch him in anything else.  I think that Denzel is exploring different characters for his acting craft and IMHO he nailed this one for a functioning alcoholic... we all know some of them and it's what they do... pretend like the alcohol is a choice. Another one of the iconic lines from the movie.. "I drink because I choose to drink."  RIGHT...

Thanks Gary for sharing your thoughts and stopping by. I understand and respect your thought provoking comment.

Gene ~  Good point.. when going to a movie be open to the message.. I think the hard part is when the movie does not meet the expecations you had going into it... then changing gears to "get the message."  I really liked Larry Crown for the message it had for real estate home owners in the past economy.. did you see that one?

Carra, We saw Flight without knowing much about the movie. It was a great movie..maybe my very favorite. Being involved with flying for so many years...I am not aware of any of the pilots with a drinking problem. Always heard " 12 hours ...bottle to throttle!" This was a very poignant film and I still thinking about the situation. Thank you for such a brilliant review. Margaret
