My Nephew is in the NFL - Again! Kansas City Chiefs
Okay, maybe the 3rd time will be the charm? My “lil nephew”, all 6’3 & 245 pounds of him, is on his 3rd NFL team. That in itself is a dream for him, and goes against all odds for a kid who played Little League, high school and then college football to finally “make it” to the NFL.
2 years ago after graduating from the University of Central Missouri (also my husband’s alma mater) in Warrensburg, Missouri, 45 minutes from home - my nephew intensified his workouts and prepared for the big time. During the NFL lockout, he worked out with the local team, the Kansas City Chiefs. They didn’t select him, so his search & workouts continued. Two weeks into the season and out of the blue, he got a call one morning from his agent who told him that the St. Louis Rams wanted to see him. A few hours later, he was on a flight to training camp. Really??? Everyday we hoped that his journey would continue. The day that the team had to cut down to their roster, we waited for a call with good news. Well, we made it through the cut that day, and he would be on the practice squad! We were all happy that this would give him time to continue learning the plays, and stand in line waiting just in case something happened to one of the Tight Ends on the roster (an injury). The next day, we got the call that he was coming home. It seems that the coach picked up a player that he knew from another team. They were at their 5 guy limit. I learned that football contracts aren’t like my airtight real estate contracts. You can sign one, and then be gone the next week.
Next, he got a call from the Green Bay Packers. Those fans are serious! Again, cut on the final day. He was persistent and continued to work out to be prepared for the next time that he would get the next call. He was confident when I asked him if that would happen. I believed him. Beyond being a good player, and his stats in college and the fact that 3 teams have called him - prove that, he is a good person. My nephew is solid, hardworking and really a respectful young man. He is also fun to be around and smart. We love him exactly like he is! So I wasn’t surprised when this Tuesday, Demarco called his Uncle Wayne to tell him the good news. Even better was the fact that this time it was the local team, the Kansas City Chiefs calling. Whew - close to home!
I am actually dreading the fact that one day our nieces and nephews may be leaving Kansas City. For a few weeks, we’d been trying to schedule time to have lunch and just catch up before he got away from us. My fear is that they are growing up. Okay, as my hubby reminds me, Demarco (and Ashli who is in the Air Force & wants to go active duty) ARE grown. Oh my! At 24 & 23 respectively, I need to be prepared to let them go. But for now, they are home.
Today, Demarco had his 2nd day “working” starting at 6:30am with the practice squad. We love that! It’s like a regular job – just playing football and living a dream.
My fingers are crossed that since they called him mid season with a couple of injured players – that he will make it through the season this time - and be back next year. The team is struggling and they need him. We’re definitely thinking positive…the media stories are good.
Pinch me - and Go Kansas City Chiefs!
