Don't Look Behind that Sleek New Desktop!Curing the Rat's Nest of Wires

pngRight now the apple of my eye – is well – my new Apple.  I just bought an iMac desktop with a nice large screen – AND I LOVE IT!  So sleek, so modern, so cool….and sooooooo tangled with wires its simply not to be believed.

One of the reasons I’m bringing this up is because I once had a listing with a computer geek who didn’t really understand that having the entire place festooned with wires was NOT going to attract buyers.  He thought all the high-speed connections he put in would be a selling point, but in truth, being able to connect to the internet at lightening speed while in the bathroom is just not going to be the thing that clinches the deal.  A few weeks ago, that was brought home to me again when showing a house with an office that looked like a rat had built a home there with a tone of excess wire.   It’s important that sellers recognize that although we all know there are still a lot of wires attached to computer systems, that have that tangled rats nest prominently visible is probably not the best idea in the world.  It looks MESSY and it’s a dust trap besides.

So, I’m rolling up my sleeves and taking control of my own rats nest and trying to organize my computer and it’s wiring so at least I can dust around it.  As you can see, I already started with the Velcro, but it is still a mess.  But I’m determined! After all, I’m a computer lover with three other loves in my life – three Siberians that SHED.  I need to be able to dust around the wires and not let the hair collect.

This is what I am armed with:  Cable ties with Velcro, and a couple of  Cable Turtles and a couple of mini-Cable Turtles.  It’s a work in progress, and here’s  hoping I can be an example for my sellers.  Hopefully I’ll tame my own rat’s nest before I have to talk to my seller’s about theirs.

Sometimes we spend more time telling our clients how to fix things that we have no time to take care of our own homes...We are not selling though. Good explanation with how-to photos.

Excellent post- so many pics, including our own on occasion, offer a glimpse of this ugliness- maybe we're so used to seeing it that it's become invisible.  Congrats on your Apple- we use one, but I've remained with my Dell.  The quality output on the Apple is incomparable.

Cathy - there are new "catch phrases"for just about everythin.  I'm not finished and these things are far from perfect, but I will say from what I've done so far that the "cable turtle, when used correctly works.  It isn't a "cheap" solution, but it is one that declutters considerably.

Terry - It's working - although they aren't a bargain.  But betwen the ipod (one has to have the essentials) the card reader for sentrilock (OK ya gotta have one) the speaker system (can't be without those itunes)  the cable modem (not doing much without high-speed) the phone wire (need that too) the printer/fax/scanner/copier (at least I don't have one of EACH) and the USB and firewire hubs - HELLO - its a lot of wires!

Teri - I think its important to have the computer area as tidy as possible so at least someone can dust.  That's the biggest issue for me with all the dogs.

Laurie - I'm glad you actually like the Apple.  Apples were used in the science lab all the time. You don't think of scientists as needing good graphics, but we would do a lot photography and we had powerpoint presentations as well as creating figures that had to be practically ready to just "paste" on our publications.  I use the apple to prepare lectures when I teach etc. There was also a lot of specialty software that we used for things like flow cytometry and statistical programs that ran best on an Apple.  I wish the MLS would run on the Mac OS...but it doesn't. So I have a partitioned hard drive.  It can work for the real estate professional so long as we can run Windows for the MLS.

Hi Ruthmarie - I've seen conduit or plastic track used to control cables, but never heard of the Cable Turtle. That will give me a great excuse to stop by the computer store this weekend!

John, I saw those too.  But I have really darkly stained cherry desk and darkly stained oak plank floors.  The plastic was BEIGE and I had a feeling it was going to look like plate of pasta on my floor and only draw attention TO the situation.  There were some rubber grabbers that bunched the wires together and allowed you to "control" the bundle on going towards the surge protector. I may pop for those first because they aren't so "in your face."  There was also a plastic box that you could attach to your desk, but I thought that could make things worse when it came to unravel everything.   Enjoy your trip to the computer store!

Hi, Ruthmarie - It sounds like things are coming together.  Our office, on the other hand, is still in total disarray.  I'm hoping everything will be up and running by Monday.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Hi Jesse and Kathy,

I'm trying.  Not finished yet, but its coming together slowly.  At least I don't have to take everything apart just to get on-line.  So I can do my work and not take two steps forward and one back.  I also got really sick in the middle of the transition which messed up for an addtional five days. There was one famous night when it took 7 hours to install printer drivers on the Mac/Windows partition.  That wasn't pretty.  The "Turtles" help _ but I need more of them and they aren't cheap by a long shot. But in the long run, I think they will help - I have about four turtles behind my printer. Not pretty,  but I CAN dust it and its not an awful rats nest.   The combo of the dog hair and the rats nest made me promise myself that I would "do it right" the next time.  But I dreaded the process so much that I put it off. The large screen on the iMAC is great for photos!

Andrew, this guy had wires EVERYWHERE!  He had wired the place so there was a hard high-speed connection (not wireless) to the internet at almost every point in the unit. He tried to FSBO it first and this was in his "listing sheet."  He used metal wire covers all over the walls which distracted from the beautiful moldings that the large pre-war unit he owned. People wanted to know what all the "stuff" was. What he didn't get was that most people a rather happy with wireless and keeping the rats nest to one primary computer!  He was a programmer with a master's in information systems, but most of the rest of the world isn't. No, you can't make this stuff up...
