The Turtle Bay Championship in Hawaii

If you have ever worked a tournament before, you know that most of the workers are all volunteers.  On Oahu, a very large part of the volunteers are either Active Duty Military or Retired Military serving in Hawaii.

The B.O.S.S. Program from Schofield Barracks (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers) provides the transportation around the course and many of our other veterans are scattered around the course as marshalls, gallery control, spotters, parking lot and a plethora of other positions.  The Servicemembers love to get away and spend time doing volunteer work.

Tonya and I volunteer at the tournament which is a lot of fun.  Yesterday, Tonya was able to stop a few players and take some pictures which I wanted to share.  For you golfers out there, these should be some pretty familiar faces.

The first picture is of Ben Crenshaw and Tonya Kucic.  This was specifically taken for Jay McGillicuddy

Hale Irwin and Tonya Kucic

Tom Kite and Tonya Kucic

Lee Trevino and Tonya Kucic

While Tonya had her work out on the course, I was one of the volunteers that picked the players up from the Honolulu International Airport and drove them 45 minutes across the island to the Turtle Bay Resort.  You will never beleive what we talked about during the drive.......REAL ESTATE IN HAWAII of course.  The subject cant help to be brought up as we drove through the city, country and beachfront home areas.

It's very nice to live in Hawaii and be able to see some great professional tournaments each year.

All of the professional tours come to our island of Oahu to play:  The regular PGA Tour, The Champions Tour and the LPGA Tour.

Aloha!

Hi Dave, I am wicked jealous and I am glad you and Tonya had a great time. Maybe the pros will call you when they want to buy a new home on the island.

I was surprised Lee Trevino was there. I am glad to see him back playing. I wonder if they paid him an appearance fee to be there. I wonder if all his expenses were paid.

Those pros must have they had died and gone to heaven standing next to Tonya and getting their picture taken with her. They probbaly wanted her autograph on the photo to take home.

Hale Irwin has the same birthday as me.

Jay-I told Tonya to PLEASE get a picture of Ben Crenshaw just for you and as usual, she came through!

It would be nice to work with a pro-golfer in a real estate transaction.......I mean, maybe we could go out and play golf and talk real estate.  That would be pretty nice huh?  I am dreaming!

Right now I am involved with a former NFL Football player in a transaction which is pretty neat.  He talks just like an average Joe but its kind of cool to know he is (was) a celebrity.

I am not sure about Trevino but you are probably right about having his expenses paid and getting an appearance fee.

I picked up a golfer named Jimmy Powell and his wife from the airport on Monday.  He is retired from the Champions Tour and he told me something very interesting.  When they retire from the Champions Tour, they are only allowed to play in 4 tournaments each year which they get to choose.  He said they didn't want the old guys slowing up the play on the course so they only let thim play 4.

Yes, I am sure they thought that about Tonya.  As a matter of fact, I am SO SURE because she told me what some of the dirty old men were saying out there.  I didn't post their pictures because they said some pretty in appropriate things.  Too bad that there are a few jerks out there.

Were you and Irwin born the same year too?

Dave, no he is nine years older.

That doesn't surprise me what those old coots may have said to Tonya. It's a disgrace. Did you get to walk around the course with anyone from the side lines.

I went to the 1989 US Open in Brookline Mass. and I attended the Wednesday practice round. That was real cool. Nicklaus, Davis Love III and Greg Norman all in one group.

In 1992 I had just missed the tournament at Kapalua as we arrived they just left and I played the course the following Friday. It was in the best condition I had ever played on.

In 1994, I played Poipu Bay, I also got to see the Grand Slam of Golf's final round. I enjoyed playing there too.

Jay-I should have known you were much younger.

I didn't have a chance to go out to the course which really sucks.  My clients come first and I am swamped right now.

What a great group that was to watch in 1989 at the Open.  I would have loved to see Nicklaus play in person while he was still competitive.

Poipu Bay is great and I am glad to hear that you experienced it.  Too bad they dont play the Grand Slam there anymore.  I have never played Kapalua (yet) so you have one up on me Jay.

Aloha!

David....  damn, Tonya was one lucky woma, especially Trevino. My claim to fame on the golf course has been Bob Hope at a pro-am that I caddied at in 1983. But some great pictures.  Thanks for sharing them.  PS>>..  haven't seen you around lately. Or maybe I haven't been around lately... lol

Jeff-The pics are very nice and great keepsakes.  No kidding, you caddied at the Bob Hope?  That great.  Who did you caddy for?  I have been extremely busy Jeff.  Business is kicking _ _ _ right now.  Aloha Sir!
