 NEW 2013 TAX in GEORGIA
Georgia Car Title Tax Change

Blue sports car

CAR INFORMATION ON A REAL ESTATE SITE? Well, yes, don't we all use our cars all the time? Won't a GEORGIA CAR TITLE TAX CHANGE effect all of us in Georgia? How could we do our real estate work without our vehicles?

The GEORGIA CAR TITLE TAX CHANGE is major and the change will effect everyone. The tax will be due on all vehicle purchases on or after March 1, 2013. The vehicle purchase will be taxed at the vehicle's value as determined by the State of Georgia regardless of what you paid for the vehicle. Purchases from individuals as well as purchases from dealers fall into the same category.

Manila File FolderAfter the purchase, when you go to the County office to register the vehicle and get your Title, you will have to pay the new tax due from the GEORGIA CAR TITLE TAX CHANGE before you get the Title in your name.

For those who may want to estimate the new tax to be paid, the Georgia Department of Revenue prepared an information sheet that is interactive. The calculations there are for an estimate ONLY. Your county will determine the amount for your GEORGIA CAR TITLE TAX CHANGE for whatever vehicle you have purchased based on the State's data and the County's data. If you aready own a car, the process stays the same as always.

Yes, there are exceptions and, yes, they are complicated.  One complication - the cars already in one's possession. However, the changes are fully spelled out in the many publications that are available.  Want to know more? Gwinnett County even offers the video below to explain the process.

Hope you enjoy listening to and watching the whole explanation. It will be interesting to hear folks talk about the changes over the next couple of years.

Have a happy day -
Lynn

Thanks for stopping by.
It means a lot to me to see each of you here!

JORDON -
The changes will phase in from 2013-2023. It seems it will be cheaper in the end BUT the state values the vehicle - not the owner. So if I get a year-end special and save $5000 - the state may still value the vehicle at the full  MSR (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail) price. The valuation guide link is included also in the post.
BARBARA JO -
And Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well!  Among the many great features of ixactcontact.com are the free two month trial
(code to use is ODAT) and no contract required. I still enjoy ixactcontact.com very much. If I can assist in making it work again for you - please let me or Rich know.
JENNIFER - We have had an annual ad valorem tax that is being eliminated. The
tax format will be different now. Depending on the value placed on the vehicle - in the long run - this may be less expensive for the vehicle owner.
REBECCA - Change is the spice of life! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Enjoy your Habitat build. I am linking to your post here so to share the news in case others want to join your group!

TONI - I appreciate the SUGGEST as this is a radical change. The more we real estate professionals know about this, the better.  For purchases made between January 2012 and February 2013, a citizen of Georgia may choose the old style taxation or the new. It is very important to get this news out.

Have a happy day -
Lynn
