California Home Affordability Rises in 2012

Great news for those looking to buy a home in California! California's Home Affordability Index rose to an all time high this year in many California counties. The Home Affordability Index measures the percentage of households that can afford to purchase a median priced single-family home in various regions throughout the state. This information is provided by the California Association of Realtors. While this is good overall news, it is also striking that many of California's most populated areas including Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and San Diego are not reflected in areas with 50%+ Affordability - still no doubt that it's a good time to buy throughout the state with interest rates at historic lows and home prices still well off their previous highs.

Looks like there are still some great areas in California as far as affordability goes - I used to live in Laguna so wasn't the MOST affordable place but sure was awesome!!!  I miss it!

Hi Dave - not as affordable as most of the country, but California is still a great place to live and buy real estate.

David, I’m not surprised that Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and San Diego are not reflected in areas with 50%+ Affordability – and yet we have more buyers that can afford to buy than we have inventory to sell them.

Dave ... I like your post and theme that home affordability is up in Southern California.  Now we need home owner sellers to get on board and recognize their good opportunites in this market.
