Last week I headed off with fellow Keller Williams Associates from different offices at 6 in the morning to spend the day at what we thought was going to be Staten Island. (Hence my trip to the home improvement store for the right gear) As it turned out we were re-routed to South New Jersey.
We first headed to the large Keller Williams Office in Monmouth, New Jersey where we spent hours doing work in relation to the thousands and thousands of donated items. After that we headed further south with multiple trucks that were loaded with the supplies. We then helped hand out food and other supplies at one of the centralized shelters for the rest of the day.
When it came time to leave I wanted to be able to stay - it broke my heart to hear what these people had been through and were still going through. I wanted to be able to help more than I had and I felt helpless. For those who are thinking about volunteering; in these areas they need the help desperately. It will give you such a good feeling to know you were able to help someone else in their hour of need.
As a result, I came away from this more grateful than ever, that I have a place to live, food in my fridge and warm clothes if I need them. While this will be a very tough Thanksgiving for so many millions of people, you can make it a little bit brighter if you can volunteer just a little of your time. And it doesn't have to cost you a thing and can enrich not only your life but many others in so many ways.
