Holiday Stress?  The Way You Breathe Could Be Causing Anxiety!

Did you know that there is a right way and a wrong way of breathing?   Symptoms of breathing the wrong way include fatigue, anxiety, being emotional or irritable, muscle tension, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.  Sound familiar?

Breathing the right way doesn't require drugs, it doesn't cost money, and training your body is quick and simple.  In no time you can feel calmer and have more energy.  In addition, you will be able to react to stressful situations with more control and a clearer head.

Are you breathing from your chest or your belly?

"Belly breathing" (diaphragmatic)  is the way nature intended...calm and controlled.

"Chest breathing" simulates the "fight or flight" response.  It's rapid breathing your body is only supposed to use when it senses danger and needs to be ready to fight or run for it's life.

Chest breathing  can be exhausting if it becomes routine.

A quick way to test your breathing:

lay on the floor

Lay on a flat surface (bed or floor) and place one hand on your chest.

Place the other hand over your belly, just above your navel.

Take several deep breaths and watch to see which hand is moving up and down.

If the hand on your chest is moving, your body is wasting prescious energy.

The ideal is for the hand on your chest to remain still, and the hand on your belly to be moving.

The Exercise:

test your breathingUse the same position used to test your breathing.  Take a deep breath, in through your nose, raising your belly, and hold for for a count of five.

Exhale through your mouth, lowering your belly, for a count of five.

Repeat nine more times.

If you are a lifelong chest breather, this will feel very awkward and uncomfortable.  It will get easier with practice.

Do this exercise at least once a day, for a couple of weeks, in a private and quiet location.  Once it becomes natural, you will find you can do it sitting or standing, as needed, to reduce anxiety and tension.

Taking a five or ten minute breathing break each day will do wonders for your attitude and stamina and add quality years to your life.

I love going to hot yoga.  Proper breathing is taught and practiced in the class.  So essential to our health.

You know Sharon, I found out about this not long ago because I was constantly getting winded.  It turned out that after a surgery last fall when it hurt to bell breathe normally I got in the "habit" of chest breathing and hadn't stopped.  I'm still not 100% back to right because I had done it for so long, but I'm conscience of it and working on it.  This was a great reminder.

I am a trained dancer and singer in my former life and breathing in each case was critical.  Great training.

Sharon, I learned proper breathing when I studied Hatha Yoga years ago. When I go to a yoga class and the teacher isn't teaching the right way to breathe, it is so frustrating. This is such great information!

Janice:  I'm glad I served as a reminder!

Lloyd:  I used to have a yoga instructor come to my home once a week.  She moved to Hawaii....the nerve.  I continued on my own for awhile and eventually got out of the habit.

I've not been able to meditate, at least the couple times I tried it....my mind is always on fast forward, and just won't cooperate.

David:  Holidays are more stressful for people, but I know that even non-holiday times of the year, I'm needing  to calm myself.  It's like the world is spinning faster!

Kristin:  Oh that explains the burst of attention today...I was wondering what was going on, LOL!  Thanks for stopping over to tell me!

Dorie:  Thank you for returning....always nice to see you again!

Al & Peggy:  Oh no!  That's something you need to work on, LOL!  Glad I could be helpful!

Kathy:  I've been busy decorating for Christmas ALL DAY....it's after 9pm and I'm just getting to AR.  Thanks for including me in your post!  I appreciate it!

Lyn:  Try it, you'll like it!  Probably not at first, but you will eventually like the way it makes you feel.

Gretchen:  I tried to be as specific and clear as possible to make it easy enough for people to try.  My hope is that they will develop a habit of breathing right and improve their health by doing the excercise.

Paula:  I've never tried the "hot" yoga....I doubt very much I would like it.  I get really cranky and a headache when I over heat, LOL!

Tammy:  At least you have an excuse.  I was just breathing wrong....probably always was.  I couldn't believe something so simple could make such a difference in how I felt.

Michelle:  The easiest and most comfortable way to do it is to lay down.  It's still not easy for me while standing.  I hope you get a handle on it....it is worth the effort!

Connie:   Slow is good, but just make sure it's from the belly and not the chest.

Frank & Karen:  Thank you!  Hope it helps others....it certainly made a difference in my life.

Nan:  I envy you....I would love to be either one....you get to do both....lucky you!

Sharon:  Thank you!  I'm glad you liked the post.  It's important to trust the instuctor.  You don't get as much from the class when you doubt their ability as an instructor.

Everyone who does Yoga knows the correct way to breath.  If I feel stressed, I just do my Yoga breaths.

It amazes me to think that somewhere aalong the line in transition from infant to adult we programmed ourselves to not even have the ability to breathe properly.  When I re-learned it was from watching a baby and the belly moving.  Just one of the important things we forget as time marches on.

Great tips here, Sharon.  Now that you mention it, I know that's the better way to breathe.  Now, I'm going to try to catch myself during the day to see what I actually do.

Kevin:  We can learn so much from watching babies and children.  It's sad how the world changes us!

Debbie:  When I first learned of this technique, I practiced it 5 or 6 times a day.  It eventually became more natural.  I notice chest breathing in others now....so many people are breathing the wrong way and don't realize it.

Beth:  Panic attacks and anxiety feel like you have no control...it's so important to understand that breathing is one aspect that you can control.
