Stucco Buildings Can Experience Wood Rot Too.

Wood Rot on a stucco building

Because of the strong structural appearance of a stucco covered building, many feel that the structure is free of wood rot. Wood rot to the trim boards, fascia, bellybands are just as likely, if not more, as any other building. It is important that a regular inspection of the outside appearance and inside leak detection be done.

Failure to catch problems to the outside barrier, can lead to much greater loss in the future. Since the stucco surface will not show the water getting in behind the surface, it may go undetected for years. If you are not comfortable with the inspection of the exterior, hire someone who is qualified to help. There are many contractors in your area that may be able to help.

Honesty, Integrity, Results, Experienced. HIRE Me!

Good morning Tom -

As you may know most of the buildings in the Albuquerque area are covered with stucco.  You're exactly right they too can have wood rot and I encourage all my buyers to have a home inspection searching out such problems.  Good job my friend.

Stucco trim is so often NOT installed properly.  Or it has not been inspected in years and water will always creep in.

Thanks John. I have heard conversations like "I want a stucco home because they don't have dry rot problems", and that just is not the case.

Enjoy this day!

The way that these buildings were built require constant attention Jay Man. The lack of flashing may have been okay at the time of construction, but it has led to so many problem ever since.

Tom, it can be especially troublesome in Florida's warm and humid climate.  A constant problem with all wood construction not properly inspected and/or maintained.

Tom, I do not see a lot of stucco here but attention to detail is critical on those claddings. Like you show so much potential for hidden issues.

Hi Tom,

I see this from time to time. I don't tear apart the home to check behind the crappy stucco job. The EFIS is always a deep concern for me as an inspector.

Have a great day in Sacramento.

Best, Clint McKie

I have heard that Hawaii has those same conditions. Regular inspections and maintenance is important Kevin.

When the best construction methods are not used, extra care is needed to keep the moisture out Donald.

I can understand your concern Clint, what we do not see can be the greatest issue.

Tom, I see homes all of the time with this issue.  Preventative maintenance would surely help.

We have numerous communities in Florida of all-stucco covered homes. It does require special maintenance and close inspection.
