IMSD Secret: Two Places to BLOG Real Estate

IMSD secret: 2 places to blog* real estate...

pssst here's TOP secret information from an IMSD webinar (that is Internet Marketing Specialist designation)   IMSD information about where to blog? The word "blog*" is a verb in that sentence.

WordPress symbol

Two places to BLOG real estate

1. Your WordPress.org site

2. ActiveRain*

IMSD is the Internet Marketing Specialist Designation. IMSD is a sister company to ActiveRain. Perhaps IMSD has a bias toward ActiveRain.   I took the IMSD blogging webinar yesterday.  I have been blogging since 2005 but I still got a lot out of the blogging webinar.

You are cordially invited**

Want to take the IMSD classes? IMSD invite

Want to become an ActiveRain Member? ActiveRain invite

ActiveRain Logo

I am an Ambassador for ActiveRain so I am biased too.

I have two WordPress.org websites as well.   How do you as a real estate agent / mortgage person decide where to blog? There are plenty of places to blog about real estate.  Every other day it seems the next real estate network springs up and tries to be ActiveRain... The next shiny object.

The IMSD invite link above currently has a discount on the class.   IMSD and ActiveRain work well together.

Other real estate blogging options:

How about Blogger.com?  Blogger.com is Google!  Chad Hyams (the voice of IMSD)  still said that Blogger.com was not one of the two places to blog real estate.  I had a Blogger.com blog in early 2006, but I got rid of it after a few weeks.

How about blogging on WordPress.com?  It's confusing but if you are geeky enough you want to be on WordPress.org NOT WordPress.com  Chad said so in the IMSD webinar on blogging.  I have always thought WordPress.org was the way to go from the search engine perspective.  I have seen people start a WordPress.com blog and convert it to a WordPress.org site later.  Or abandon it... WordPress.com sites do not have the plugins that WordPress.org have. The WordPress symbol is used for both WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

Tumblr.com ?   I have NEVER had a Tumblr site!  Tumblr does not have the plugins that WordPress.org has.

Those are blogging options that have real estate sites as well as other blogs.  There are other places to blog...

Real estate blogs

Does your real estate website have a blog built in?  Maybe that is an option for you.

What about a real estate network like the RealTown blogs?  RealTown is where I started blogging in 2005. My posts on my RealTown site still show up in search engines... I do not blog there now.  Internet Crusade / RealTown is a real estate community like ActiveRain but smaller.

I wondered during the IMSD webinar what the e PRO certification is recommending agents use as their real estate blog these days.  I got my e PRO certification long ago before I had ever heard of real estate blogs.  I would imagine they ePRO recommend WordPress.org too.  Anyone taken the ePRO cert classes recently?  Who do they recommend?

Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Tumbr, your real estate website, RealTown blogs or hundreds of other options were NOT the two options recommended in the IMSD webinar I listened to.  The two places to blog are WordPress.org and ActiveRain.com ... this will be our little secret.   I hope I don't get in trouble for letting the cat out of the bag... this IMSD secret.

Decisions Decisions: Which of the Two places to BLOG real estate?

How do you decide which to use  WordPress.org or ActiveRain.com ???

1. WordPress.org

If you are really, really geeky why not try WordPress.org?  You own it all.  The site is all you.  You can make a WordPress.org site into more than a blog.  You can use the WordPress.org plugins.

2. ActiveRain.com

If you need a community to learn how to blog start on ActiveRain. If you want hyperlocal content to show up in Google FAST, ActiveRain RainMaker works.  If you don't know what hyperlocal content is, you probably need ActiveRain.

Know that unless you upgrade to a RainMaker account your content is not visible to the general public or search engines but for some newbies that is a blessing in disguise. As you learn to blog and use social media as a member of ActiveRain, the cost to become a RainMaker goes down.

It's Time for Us to Give Back RainMaker Price Breaks

The two links in this post are referrals to IMSD and ActiveRain.com** from me.

In the real Estate industry but not a member yet?  Join ActiveRain try the non RainMaker account for free Members Only Content.  Accumulate points.  The cost of RainMaker goes down as you accumulate ActiveRain points.  Learn about blogging and social media from your peers.  Or take the IMSD classes, they'll tell you this secret...The two places to BLOG real estate!

Richard  Are your Outside blogs showing up in Google ahead of the same content on AR? It is so easy to post to AR Outside blogs.  I am surprised more people don't do it with their local content and brand it locally.

Michael Setunsky I was six years in July last year. I joined in July but did not come back for a few weeks.  Is your WordPress site .com or .org?

Michael Layton Switching a WordPress.com to .org I think it has to be relatively easy.  You can import content from Blogger.com, AR etc. so I would think importing from .com to .org should be a piece of cake.  Personally   I would have to hire someone to do it probably.  There are some good WordPress for real estate groups on Facebook.  You can usually ask a question and get a few people to provide link to directions online.  Occasionally you get inudated with the WP experts who want you to hire them to do it for you. There is a group on AR for WordPress that I moderate.  It is not very good anymore. Back in 2006, 2007 it was a great group helping one another.

Joel  wrote "What I would relly like to do, but not "geeky" or smart enough is have my own custom website and blog. " I was just reading Wikipedia this morning about where the word "blog" a word I hate by the way... came from. I know it is web + log but I needed a quote for a post on my WordPress site.  It says "The emergence and growth of blogs in the late 1990s coincided with the advent of web publishing tools that facilitated the posting of content by non-technical users."   WordPress.org etc are web publishing too for us "non-technical users.   Some of us are more "non technical" than others.

I did something earlier this week that at first glance I thought "I want to do that but I can not do that, I am not geeky enough to do that"   Denise Hamlin (someone I know from AR) shared something Dave Keyes (someone I am aware of from AR) shared on Google+   It is something you do with FTP.  I have a real fear of FTP.  It took Denise two tries.  It took me a lot of tries.  I said on Google+ that it took me 22 tries and I was probably exaggerating in my frustration, but I did IT.  It really only is something that someone who has a WP.org (or Drupal etc.) site and is on Pinterest and wants a link could do so I will not bore you with the details.

I did it.  I did not run because I wanted that link even if I had to use FTP to do it.

Barbara  For most people it is either OR, not both.  Most members here only blog on ActiveRain.  Or blog on ActiveRain until some point when they are comfortable moving onto something else.  The good news is that IMSD gives AR a biased thumbs up.  It does not have plugins, etc. for some that is a positive.  There is not a big learning curve.  There are not updates.  There are not plugins that don't get along.  There's spam but someone else is worrying about it.  You probably have way less chance of being hacked here.

Jeff  AR is a great place to start blogging  for most in our industry.  Some move on to something else once they have proved to themselves they will keep up with it.

Liz  I think WP.org is a commitment.  So is AR but it is different.

Gail wrote "but the IMSD webinairs bring it all these bits of information into a coherent framework." It is so coherent.  For me the webinars are good but making myself do the homework is the framework.  I saw things about Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn (which I think I am familiar with) that I did not get just from using them.

IMSD is good.  Perhaps the new ePRO is similar.  I think I must have taken ePRO in 2004?   It was Internet Crusade at the time.  It was the second reincarnation of ePRO.  Bill Lublin's company is the 3rd reincarnation of ePRO?

On my new Wordpress site for some reason I like the editor better than on my first WP site.   Maybe it is my theme.  WordPress.org is not real easy for me, I admire people who are able to easily use it.  I usually prefer AR's editor.  Less going on.

Thanks all for the comments.

Nice post Maureen. To each their own. I tried word press but gave it up. IMHO word press blogs all look the same. I've been on blogger for 7 years and google loves my blog nycblogestate. I never think about the platform just the content and feed back from consumers, the press and other brokers.

Imsd has been an excellent investment, especially with the imsd revised course. I like knowing all  blogging sources and opinions on each, to maximize their value.

Everyone please hit "Report a concern" on number 21.

Get your 10 points!

Mitchell in the IMSD course he said if you have a Blogger.com blog that is performing don't kill it.  And of course your site perfoms.

To me Blogger.com blogs look the same except the content. Or they used to.   I use the Thesis theme on my first blog so to me my blog looks like Thesis theme.  It is a more difficult theme to pretty up, I heard that at more than one WordCamp. I am more into content than pretty or cute.  I don't get the point of a pretty site that has no content.

I think 2013 will be the payday for the real estate agents who got out of the business and became loan officers and then became website builders catering to the real estate industry  or SEO experts catering to  preying on the real estate industry.

Randy  The revised webinars are great. Jump back in.

Carolyn You are right, they did a great job in the revision.

I only blog on Active Rain.  Sometimes I can barely keep up with that let alone a second (or third!) place to blog.  I've thought about it but just do not have the time.

Maureen, I don't use a blogger theme. I customized it. i used a theme designed for word press called Revolution church  and made changes to that theme. I took out the little crosses. I didn't know what I was doing, I don't know HTML but I played with it and it came out Ok so now I'm afraid to change it.

I have thought of becoming a website real estate consultant because very few agents in Manhattan have blogs or websites but I'm so busy with real estate. I can't keep up with all the social media and sell real estate at the same time.

Dave  Cut and paste comments do not impress me.  I saw the same comment on Andrea's post today.

Christine Sorry, IMSD (or I) are not suggesting that anyone use AR AND WordPress.  Maybe I garbled this.  The secret is IMSD suggests  WordPress. org OR ActiveRain for blogging.  They suggested both tools.  Either / or.

Some of us were blogging before AR, mine was not on WP.org but I moved it there when it was about 18 months old, when I had been on AR for about 4 months.  It's not a real estate blog, but it has real estate on it.  The people using both is the exception. Many people justify chucking AR and going with WP.org for their real estate blog at some point, that whole sharecropping angle, owning rather than renting.   Andrea's blog featured today deals with that.

OR

The point being made is ActiveRain is a great place, it is a sister company IMSD. AR is easier and faster than a WP.org blog.  There is a community.  WordPress.org is just the other tool they recommend for real estate blogs.  There are great real estate blogs on lotsa platforms.  Different strokes for different folks.

Mitchell I could never do that... take anything out of a theme.  I should be looking at some stuff with my theme though now that I got over some of my fears  I deleted my whole blog once and had to get rescued. I could not update versions for awhile. That's how it happened.  I had it backed up. Perhaps I could have rescued myself.

Pippa I can not remember when the revision was but I am finding more time and looking forward to the webinars since the revision.

Olga That's the point. You picked one of two places IMSD is recommending. It is eirther OR or what is working for you. It is NOT about expanding, blogging elsewhere. Do it where it works.  AR works for many in the real estate industry.  You did good!  You got it right... for you.  You are here!

WordPress.org works too.

Paula torso huh?
