A large part of our job, as real estate virtual assistants, is to attempt to capture our clients’ “voices” on their Facebook, Twitter and Google+ profiles. We want to come across as engaging, personable and approachable while still maintaining a certain level of professionalism. This is complicated, and it’s something that many real estate agents throughout the industry struggle with. How can you remain professional without being boring, and how can you show your personality and humor without being inappropriate? It does, admittedly, present a bit of a conundrum.

There a few ways that you can successfully capture an adequate balance in your social media marketing efforts. It’s difficult to reach perfection in implementing professionalism AND personality. It takes a special social media talent. You can, however, become a seasoned pro. It takes practice, thought and attention. Think about the following:

Who is my audience? This may be the most important question you can ask yourself as you decide how casual you can be. Everyone has a different demographic or target market. Every neighborhood has a different personality. It’s important to be yourself, but you also need to appeal to your general demographic. You have to gauge how comfortable your audience would be with you having a more casual marketing strategy. Would it scare them off, or reel them in? Before you can adopt your “social media” voice, you have to figure out the answer to that question.

What is your actual personality like? You want to be “real” in your social media presence. You want to be yourself. If you’re a bit sarcastic and quirky, have that shine through in your posts. If you’re more professional and technical, make that your online voice. This isn’t to say that you have to limit yourself to one personality type, per se, but don’t misrepresent yourself on your social networks. You want people to feel like they know the real you online, not a made up brand persona.

How is your audience responding? The easiest way to figure out what the boundary between an online presence that’s too boring and one that’s too colorful is to monitor how your audience responds. If you’re not getting ANY feedback, it might be time to let go a bit and be more casual. If you’re causing issues or offending people on your page, it might be time to tone down the personality. You want engagement and interaction, but you also want things to stay positive and upbeat.

These tactics won’t work for you overnight. You will have to take some risks and push the boundaries in order to see what your particular demographic feels comfortable with, but it’ll be well worth-it once your engagement starts to pick up speed. As always, your real estate virtual assistants are here to answer any of your social media questions. We clue you in on our tips and tricks of the trade.

Have an awesome day!
