Where is Rapid Valley?

Rapid Valley is a quiet, residential suburb located just east of Rapid City in Pennington County. Its location provides easy access to several major traffic routes including Interstate 90 to the north, Highway 16 to the west and Highway 44 to the south.

How Large is Rapid Valley?

As a growing community, Rapid Valley has a population of 8,260 according to the 2010 Census, up 17.3% from 2000. The community is currently 10.1 square miles but continues to grow as people discover its many quality attributes and close proximity to Rapid City. Most residents enjoy an average commute time of between 15-19 minutes.

Though Rapid City is just minutes away there is really no need to leave Rapid Valley for many of the services needed. Don’s grocery store and moreValley Mart is not only a convenient place for groceries but also has a post office, dry cleaners, liquor store, video rental, and flower and gift area located inside. Black Hills Credit Union is located next to Don’s for your banking needs. There are several storage facilities including Storage King, which is positioned close to Highway 44. Valley Community Church and Rapid Valley Baptist Church are two of the several churches that are well-situated within Rapid Valley.

 

What About Schools in Rapid Valley?

elementary schoolThough part of the Rapid City School system, Rapid Valley has 2 elementary schools and one middle school in the community. Rapid Valley Elementary School is located in the more established portion of the community, boosting a student body of 581. Valley View Elementary School is located in the growing, northern side of the community and is approximately 3 years old, with a student body of 609. The newest addition to the community is the middle school, East Middle School, with a student body of 559. All student counts are according to each of the school’s respective websites.

What Public Services are in Rapid Valley?

Despite the fact that Rapid Valley is not considered a large community it offers many excellent services. Rapid City Regional Airport is located just 6 miles east of Rapid Valley, making air travel effortless and convenient. Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department (RVVFD) covers 117 square miles with 41 dedicated volunteers. RVVFD is a Class 9 in rural areas, a Class 9 classification is the best rating that can be attained without a special water flow test. RVVFD has gained a rating of Class 4 (where 1 is the best and 11 the worst) in hydrant area. Rapid Valley crime index is 22% lower than the South Dakota crime index, with the South Dakota crime index being 46% lower than the National average. It is served by the Pennington County Sheriff Department and the Rapid City Police. The Rapid Valley Sanitary District provides high quality water and sewer service to the area, working closely with Rapid City to ensure quality services to the increasing population. Post office services are available at Don’s Valley Mart.

What are Rapid Valley's Neighborhoods Like?

Most neighborhoods have excellent views of not only the Black Hills but of Rapid City. preparing chicken feedRapid Valley life revolves around the household.  Families, friends, neighbors, churches, grandchildren, and more.  In addition, Rapid Valley is home of Black Hills Speedway which is located on Highway 44. The close proximity to Rapid City allows the opportunity to access a mixture of entertainment, including golf, archery and a CHL hockey team, the Rapid City Rush. The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center plays host to a wide variety of cultural and community events. Since Rapid City is a hub of the Black Hills as well as southwestern South Dakota, there is a wide assortment of shopping opportunities, including Rushmore Mall, Target, Wal-Mart, Gordman’s and Bed, Bath and Beyond. If local flavor is more to your liking, Main Street Square and Prairie Edge Trading Company are quite popular. For the sporting/ranching/hunting/fishing enthusiast there is Scheels, Cabela’s and Runnings. Getting out to enjoy the outdoors allows many more sightseeing opportunities including the Berlin Wall Exhibit in Memorial Park which is one of the largest such exhibits, Dinosaur Park, Storybook Island and City of Presidents tour. Within a short drive are the Black Hills which offer many outdoor adventures like hiking, fishing, rock climbing and camping as well visiting Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial.
