History of Sumas, WA:

Sumas was incorporated on June 18, 1891.  It served as a trading post due to its proximity to Canada.  The word Sumas comes from a native tribal word meaning "land without trees."  The huge valley near Sumas is called Sumas Prairie.  A neat fact is that in 1897, gold was discovered in the mountains nearby and then, of course, the population exploded to over 2,000 residents.  Now the town has quite a few dairy farms that play an important role in the area's economy.
