Update Dec 15, 2012; The bills are just starting to come in. Can you guess what the grand total will come to? I'll post when all is paid.
I had hernia surgery Nov 29th at Staten Island's University hospital, North Shore LIJ, and was extremely impressed with the care I received. From the first person I spoke with to the very last, a PCA, (patient care assistant). So I wanted to write a letter of thanks and also give them Kudos for a job well done on the internet. You hear so many bad stories about hospitals, I thought I could bring a little fresh air in.
I had the same surgery 40 years ago, just on the other side, had a 6 day hospital stay, and the scar (not that I cared) was about 4 inches long. This time around my Surgeon, Dr. Lance Jung, said it would be only about one inch. and I would be in the hospital for only a few hours. Wow, what a difference 40 years makes.
Every person I had contact with, and I mean every one of them, was caring and proficient at their task.
- Pre-admitting testing, Jackie and Nurse Adam EKG, blood work etc, started the ball rolling with a pleasant smile and did their assigned tasks well. ***** We even had a few laughs. When she asked me who my primary doctor was, I told her, but then added that my former doctor had given me 6 months to live, and when I didn't pay him he gave me another 6 months. (from Henny Youngman) LOL.
- Next I had to have a lung x-ray, sorry I forgot the mans name but he gets ***** as well.
- Reporting to 2 of my regular Doctors for clearance, Excellent as usual.
- Morning of the surgery, receptionist, first person I talk with, very calm, nice demeanor, puts me in the right mind frame for an important event.
- Admitting nurse, another person with calm demeanor continues my relaxed composure. *****
- Regina, Prep RN calls me into the prep area, takes information and tell me a little about what I can expect. But not too much. *****
- Patricia RN, and Isabelle RN also interview me double checking information. again *****
- Anesthesiologist introduces himself and tells me a little more about the procedure. *****
- OR Nurse Tom comes in, an big guy, my first thought was if I wanted to "escape", forget about it. A nice man, also calming demeanor. *****
- My Doctor comes by, he tells me I'm here, I respond with I'm not going anywhere, just waiting for you. We laugh.
- Operating room was big and bright, as I get on the table, they cover me with warm blankets, what a treat. Made me feel very important. *****
- Mask goes over my face and the next thing I remember is waking up in the recovering room. Wow, that was quick.
- Recovering room nurse Maureen greets me as I wake up and gets me coffee, asks me how I feel etc. *****
- They call my wife to tell her to come pick me up, PCA (patient care assistant) helps me get into a wheelchair and takes me to the car. *****
As you can see, everyone gets 5 stars. I'm just so impressed with the care and service that I must shout it from the rooftops.
So, If you are wondering what patients are saying about Staten Island's University hospital, North Shore LIJ, here is my story.
Sorry folks, no pictures of my cut, but you really didn't want to see it anyway, right?
