Moving in the Rain?

Moving when there is inclement weather brings about a number of challenges to be mindful of so that people don’t get hurt. You also don't want your furniture damaged.

Moving in the RainWhen it’s raining … sidewalks, stairs and concrete become very slippery. It’s important that your movers wear rubber soled shoes to minimize slips and falls.  Also, movers should place a folded movers’ blanket at the entrance to your home so they don’t track in dirt, water or leaves onto your floors.

Metal or other non-wood furniture is typically not blanket wrapped during the moving process; however, once the non-wood furniture is placed on the truck, a blanket might then be used. That does not mean the piece of furniture should not be covered as it is being taken from the home to the truck.  Covering the furniture with a loose blanket will keep the item dry. After all, you want to minimize moisture build up at all times.

The time to physically load and unload the moving truck will take longer than expected. Travel time from your old home to your new home will also be delayed.  And, unfortunately, those delays will result in an increase in your overall moving costs.

Moving is one of those tasks in life that Mother Nature controls…

Don’t forget, A Happy Move is an Organized Move!

Moving in the rain is no fun! Especially when new homeowners try and do it themselves. A closing is a closing and sometimes one has no choice. UGH!

Years ago, my family sold one house and closed escrow on another.  Sure enough, the move date was in October, and we had a storm blow through that weekend.  There was no choice!  I worried most about a piano being moved, but it made it through just fine!

Peggy,  I'm glad to see you're not only watching out for your client's furniture, but also your mover's safety.  It has been coming down in buckets in the south bay, also.

I absolutely HATE having new tenants move into their new rental homes in the RAIN or SNOW and sometimes it happens...then I have to accommodate them with early move-ins if bad weather is predicted!

Your post makes some great points on this issue

Appreciate your thoughts, Ginger.

I know Lloyd... the rains going down to Santa Barbara, and returning were really bad. Visibility was next to nothing.. in some sections, I barely drove 30mph!

Paula... we've been lucky - over the last 12 years, we've only encountered rain about a dozen times!
