Over the past year, it seems I've been listing an increasing number of "accessible" dwellings, both in Northwest Wisconsin and in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I serve on several Diversity committees in the real estate community, including the Wisconsin Realtors Association (WRA) Diversity in Housing Committee. And our State committee was responsible last year for the creation of an Accessibility Features Checklist, which makes it easier for both buyers and sellers to locate or market homes with these special features.
Also known as "barrier-free homes" or "handicap accessible properties", homes like these are increasingly in demand. That demand is driven not only by consumers with disabilities, but is increasingly fueled by the realities of an aging population.
483 Mondamin Trail, on Madeline Island, is an example of a home built with numerous disability features. The home is not only luxurious, but it was designed to provide easy access for an owner, a family or guests with limited mobility to enjoy the home's comfort to the fullest.
