The Tree That Is No More….

The SF Bay Area has experienced severe rain storms over the last several weeks. Consequently, the ground is saturated and many trees are being blown down from the heavy winds. Bringing in packing materials, loading and unloading moving trucks... these, too, are affected by the weather.

Tree damagedOne day last week I stopped in to my favorite taqueria to buy lunch for the crew … I happened to look outside and saw this tree trunk come up out of the ground. This was a fairly young tree.. but, even being braced to a wood pole could not help keep the roots of this tree from loosening in the wet dirt.

SF’s Department of Public Works had special trucks driving around the City so they could remove these downed trees quickly in order to prevent further damage to people or property.

Tree cuttingWhile this broken tree did not cause any damage,  there were many other areas of the Bay that experienced severe weather damage – electrical power lines were downed, cars destroyed by falling trees and many homes were left without power or heat.

Mother Nature is reaching out all across America with inclement weather. Be safe everyone!

It's so sad when a tree has to be removed or is somehow destroyed.  I remember an large, old tree we had in the front yard of my boyhood home.  on a visit many years later, I learned that the new owner had cut it down so that he could add concreate for a larger driveway.  I had been hoping I would get a chance to see it again.   In any event, have a great Holiday Season!  Eric

Thanks so much Anna for your kind thoughts... it really is wet out here!

That is so sad, Eric... and taking out a tree to make room for concrete adds to the worsening of our air. Trees are purifyers - we need all the trees we can get!

I hope the City will make it a point to replace the downed trees. They certainly provide the semblance of nature in a concrete jungle.

It's crazy how both coasts got socked in the last month.  I hope all is well.  It's going to be a long time before this area gets back to normal.

From the photos it didn't seem like it was well-rooted.  It's hard for some trees to establish roots.  Not all trees do well in urban settings.  The big trees, the old ones, are getting soaked here too. They do create a problem.

We have been getting the rain here over in the Central Valley too.  And now we have more on the way.  Stay dry!

I'm pretty sure they will Pacita... the trees are also good at absorbing all the "smog"...

Hope all is well with you, Liz...

Carla... I know. It was a very young tree.

Jim - I drove back in it this past Sunday.  In many cases there was zero visability. And the ground was just soaking wet!

Peggy, Mother Nature has most definitely shaken the bay area.  I'm fortunate to have not lost power or be in an area with a lot of flooding.  My heart goes out to anyone needing to file an insurance claim. That's part 2 of a natural disaster!  Been there - done that - did not like it or have fun!  I'm not a fan of big bad banks or big bad insurance companies!  Ask me how I really feel (LOL)!

Agreed, Kathleen.  I, too am fortunate that I don't have to deal with the consequences of the storms.  Stay safe and dry...

We are seeing the efforts of the dryer weather this winter showing itself in tree losses in the spring Peggy.
