The "New" Tappan Zee Bridge - Three designs released...

The Tappan Zee Bridge - Tarrytown NYThe photo above is a scene that will be history in a fairly short amount of time.  I took it of the “old” or “current” Tappan Zee Bridge from the River Walk right at the border of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.  For those who are interested, the Hudson Harbor complex was slightly south and to the left of the shot.

In any case, three designs for the new Tappan Zee Bridge were just released for public consumption.  They are are very different from the original bridge design and will change the landscape forever.  You can view them at this link.  Behind all the ramifications and politics there is an urgent need for a new bridge.  Where many feel the the system has fallen short is with the loss of a proposed mass transit system that would have relieved the traffic flow across the bridge and eased commuting times to NYC for those on the western side of the Hudson  River.  I tend to agree that we need to make the area more mass-transit friendly.

One of the problems with any design is the vast length that has to be traversed.  It is a 3 mile stretch across the Hudson River between Westchester and Rockland counties.

Anyway, for a sneak peak at the designs – here is a link.  I happen prefer design #2.  I’m not wild about design #1 and the arial orientation makes me undecided about design #3.   But anyway – pick  your favorite or your most hated!

Fun to see this. While I have not lived back east for some time I have been over the Tappan Zee bridge more times than I can count - I always enjoyed those views! Iimagine this is causing a bit of controversy and consternation.

That's a great photo!

Hello Ruthmarie:  Like Jeff above I have been over the Tappan Zee many times while in route from my home in Boston to points south.  My most memorable was on my Honda Goldwing motorcycle when a gust of wind came down the Hudson and almost blew me into the water.  Great Local post.

Hi Jeff - Did you look at them?  One I thought was pretty ugly.  The other two were OK, but it will really change the landscape in a very big way!

Hi Brian - Funny you should mention the WIND.  I drive a Honda Element.  Not a heavy car, but not a lightweight either. And I find that on a windy day I have to hang onto the wheel and work to keep the car straight.  There was talk of turning the old bridge into a linear park.  The first thing I thought of was cyclists and walkers being blown over the edge! In theory it sound nice....but the reality is another matter.

Hi Ruthmarie, Your original photo and the lines of color reflecting in the water is an excellent shot. I happen to prefer Design #2. Heck everything is changing and soon there will be new vistas and experiences with the new bridge. Progress always throws a curve at first but it will be an awesome new bridge, ( especially if #2 is selected, lol )

Hi William - You have excellent taste....#2 is my favorite too!  Yes, changing vistas are the new normal. Our infrastructure needs work and the changes are necessary.  The bridge has been considered "below grade" for some time now.  I literally say a prayer before I go across it. Lovely though it is, it needs to be replaced...badly.  Fingers crossed for #2!

Ruthmarie - I actually like Design #1 best, but it's not my area.  You are the one who has to see it.
