Well, Craigster, first of all, WELCOME BACK. We of the Craig Daniels Fanclub know that you've been a very busy and successful guy with a newish job and so we haven't seen you updating us quite as frequently on ActiveRain. Actually, oddly enough, moments ago, I had noticed that it was several months ago, but since you're so great, you were NOT on my Unsubscribe List. I must've instinctly KNOWN that you'd be enlightening us SOON!
Okay, so...another bookmark is in order. Also, darn--I never even NOTICED that button before. I had to stop and look at my keyboard. Don't want to touch it quite yet, as it might take me somewhere I don't want to go. Well, thanks AGAIN for keeping all of us in the loop. (Boy, if you're not constantly LEARNING, you're losing, huh?)
So appreciate your tutorial style post...thank you, thank you (from a hybrid being).
Am looking at some new computers and hoping that we will be able to get a new laptop with Windows 7.
Comment #4 is the Craig Daniels Fan club president, just kidding, but yes you do have a fan club. Thanks for today's lesson.
Maria - now just hook it up to that Google Gigabit Fiber connect in KC and wow!
Adrian - get over the speed bump and it is has great potential :)
David - glad to help!
Gayle - you know me and I have been very busy with my newish full time job! thanks for not UNsubscribing - I HATE it if I ever see my number decrease!! :)
Try out that windows key with D for starters - It minimizes all your windows so you can see your clean desktop (well most people have a messy desktop, but that's another blog post!)
Li - double you are welcome, thanks for visiting
Ki - you can probably get win7 for a while yet as people adjust, but even if you get win8 swich to traditional desktop view and you'll be in an environment that is more comfortable for some :)
Ken - couldn't ask for a better president of the club! :) glad to see you always
Craig - Good to see you. No I think I am sticking with Win7 Ultimate for a while till all the issues are worked out with the new browser as well as apps that are coming onto the market. I have never been a fan of the touch screens meself but hey that's just me. {Bob} I still like tactile keyboards like the BB.... Oh man you are probably saying but it's what you get used to and like in the long run right? That's my two cents on Win 8 for now.... I would like to check it out of course being the curious guy that I am...... Have a Happy Craigster,,,,
Hi Craig - Very timely and useful post and video. This is a major change, much bigger than Vista (ugh!), and we're all going to be needing to figure this out as time goes by.
Featured in BananaTude!

Thanks Craig. A computer tech suggested I wait for MS to put out their first service pak for 8, given their less than stellar launches of glitch free OS. They didn't cite any problems but offered that they were waiting to get more launch feedback. Have you heard of any functionality problems?
Hi Craig, I never changed to Windows 7 from Vista, but I think I will take a closer look at the New Windows 8. Watching all the videos will be very helpful for reaching a final decision to upgrade or NOT.
nice post Craig, do you recommend the new laptops running win 8 either with or without a touch screen? am hung up trying to figure out which to get as without touch screen has larger screens and the ones with touch screens have tiny screens (at least at my price point under 700k)
Hi Craig,
I bought one of my team mates a new computer a couple weeks ago. We had no idea windows 8 was going to be so challenging. It was kind of like when I switched to my MAC.
I will not be upgrading now..but this post does help...thanks for adding the links here and I've bookmarked to keep for a review.
Craig, it's great that you do these posts on the newest & greatest...I don't know if I'll go MAC or stay with PC...but I know I can count on you for guidance.
Great tips, Craig, I wish you could post it earlier... I got my new laptop couple of weeks ago and learned everything by trying it out :)
I bought a Windows 8 on Black Friday but not touch screen. It has a steep learning curve, for sure. There are things I still can't find and there are programs that appear, at first glance, to not be compatible, i.e., Google hangouts. I'm trying to stay calm as I give it time.
Well I down loaded window 8 on my lap top. However, the screen did not look like the one you have shown above. It was not a touch screen either. So I don't understand why there is a difference.
I had to uninstall it however, because I could not access our MLS system and Active Rain! When I could not get into AR that was the last straw and out came the MS8!
After reading your post, I'm kind of glad that I am on an apple. Seems like it may be a lot to learn.
Thanks for the insight, I look forward to seeing the new Windows 8 - I think this is going to be like going from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98!!!
Going to be a huge learning curve for the non-techno folks!!!
I have this bookmarked as I am due for a new computer but I am not sure about Windows 8 quite yet.
A friend of mine is a techie and loves his new Windows 8. He was demonstrating it to me, including the Windows button you describe!
I suspect there will be one in my future that will make my life difficult for a while and then it will be like ridinig a bike - Can I still ride a bike? Better RElearn how! Thanks, Craig.
The windows 8 looks pretty cool. We will be updating and phasing in windows 8 in 2013. upgrading the whole office is an expensive undertaking
Craig how interesting that I am seeing your post today. Perfect timing. I'm going to be buying a new laptop in the next week or so and I've been debating whehter to trot on down to the apple store and consider a mac or go for the usual along with windows 8. It's looking pretty exciting to me.
Craig I got Windows8 and absolutely love it! It is fun and easy to navigate (came from some learning curve) but over all very impressed with all the changes that Microsoft brought with windows8
Thanks, Craig, for your post. I will take it as a warning for problems I knew how to watch. I have never been a fan of Microsoft. It seems that the changes they make are to further their agenda rather than making it easier for users.
Changes for the sake of change do not make a better product.
I have an Android phone and am about to buy an Android tablet. I will NOT be moving to Windows 8 anytime soon.
I learned years ago not to try to pioneer on too many fronts. You guys work out the bugs before I go for it.
Craig, Thankfully I had a few minutes with my son teaching me some of the shortcuts. I will watch the video though to learn more.
Craig,
My rule of thumb with microsoft realeases is to wait for the Service Pack 1 in about six months so that the bugs get worked out. I am staying with 7 for now.
I cannot even figure out how to add my printers yet and I have had it since Black Friday. I will watch yoru video tomorrow and see what happens.
Craig I'm so thankful that you blog this subject. I'll put it in my bookmarks, so many good information and
Thanks for the tips!!
Wishing you and your entire family an absolutely wonderful Christmas Holiday! Blessings to you and yours!
Craig-
Thanks for the info on WIndows 8. I just purchased a new laptop w/Windows 7 & that's been pretty easy to learn. I was going to go MAC but PC's are so darned cheap I couldn't resist. So much of what I do is on the cloud, that I just couldn't be convinced the expense was justified. Like an iPad----do I really need one to be more productive?
Btw hope Staten Island is recoveringfrom Sandy----we are all praying for NYC!
Craig, My computer is just 3 months old. Is this something I can/should add? Just stopped by to wish you a Merry Christmas, even if I'm a bit late!
thanks EVERYONE for your comments on this post - sorry I lost track of replying to you individually as I normally like to do
Connie - very glad you came by for a visit, always glad to see you - 3 months old is probably Windows 7 and in my opinion, you won't need to do anything at all. Windows 8 on a new computer is good but not worth the time, money or possible complications for most people to do the upgrade step on existing PC.
I've just spend my first two days with my new Windows 8 laptop. And though I like the concept of the new windows start screen, I'm spending most of my time in the traditional windows 7 style desktop mode!! Perhaps as more of the new UI apps become available, it will become more compelling to upgrade...
Craig,
Late to reply to your post, but I've been using 8 since the first part of November. It is different, but the more I use it, the more I like it. At first I was thinking this is geared more towards tablet/touch screen, but I just kept working and exploring and I'm liking it.
I actually work on both platforms, windows and Mac, and wouldn't say one is better than the other mostly different, which is ok with me. Likes and dislikes about both, but personal preference is the way I learned shortcuts in certain programs that I use on both.
Definately have to be ready to spend some time "adapting" though.
No, I do not think I will be doing it. I have both a PC laptop with Windows 7 and a MAc and, hopefully, will switch to Mac. Many years was very loyal to Microsoft, but nothing really changed, problem after problem, and solving them became ridiculously difficult.
I'm going to ask you the question I've been asking lately, :): Have you found a work around for the now gone Google Sync? I cannot figure out how to get my google calendar (which syncs to my phone) to sync with the new Outlook. That's the only really frustrating thing that I have with Windows 8.
Kristin - google apps sync for outlook requires the paid version of google apps for business - as far as I know anyway. Many (like me) work entirely web based mail, calendar, contacts and have broken the tie with outlook. You could consider that as one option. If you want to keep outlook in sync, the cost would be $5/mo. HTH
Craig, just got a Toshiba with Windows 8 yesterday. I had to watch several videos to learn how to navigate the new windows!
