Fotos On The Fly - The Upper West Side – The classic NYC “Water Tower”

Sometimes when trying to show off the character of a neighborhood, I pick an unusual focal point that is a bit "outside the box".  I took this photo at dusk about  a week ago and the reason I like it so much is that it really is soooooo NYC.  It shows a roof top garden  (so typical of the Upper West Side) beneath an iconic wooden water tower.  The helicopter that happened to be flying by leaving a red light trail was an added bonus - though I admit to hustling to get that extra piece of NYC life into the photo before it disappeared from the frame.  The twilight photography added to the allover impact of a city that is always lit up and never truly sleeps.

The water towers that dot the landscape of NYC and have an interesting history. Snapping the photo prompted me to do a bit of "Googling"  and Wikapedia came to my rescue.  They have their origins in the 19th century when all buildings over six stories in height were required to have a water tower because the pressure necessary on lower floors to get the water to the top floors could burst pipes.  The original towers were actually made by "barrel makers" who were "expanding" their businesses to a new market in a city that was growing by building vertically.  To this day, the wooden water tower model is still in use and are produced by two local businesses that are family run and have been in existence since the 19th century.  So when you look at one of those wooden water towers, you are looking at a successful family-owned local business!

In the real estate industry,  agents are always trying to "brand themselves"  by introducing local color.  This type of photography helps define neighborhoods by given subtle hints of local color.  This is  why one photo is often worth 1000 words...

Ruthmarie this is a beautiful shot.  I too like to take shots that might not be the norm but really showcase the area.  Then with the internet it is so easy to do some research .

Have a great week

Ruthmarie, that is a stunning photo of the black water tower silhouetted against the darkening blue sky!  The golden glow of the street level lights adds a rich warmth to the photo!  Very interesting history of the water towers!

Hi Endre - I've been spending a lot of time on the Upper West Side since I've had  a couple of friends moving in and out of the area.  They don't have cars - so I have been volunteering - taking things to storage etc. (One moved in- the other out).  It was dusk on one of those days and the shot presented itself.  I was really happy to get the lights from the chopper above. But the view is so very NYC and so very West Side.

Thanks Jennifer - I'm trying to do more sunset and twilight photography. Everything changes as the sun goes down.  Its a whole new world.  But one could argue that people spend most of their free time at home during the late hours of the day, after dark and before sunrise (the exception being about 2-3 months during the summer).  So showing potential buyers what their community is like "after hours" is a good idea.

Hi Debbie - I've been wondering about them for a long time.  Why were they made of wood?  The fact that barrel makers were the first to craft them explains a great deal.  It just seems like an odd material.  But as I read about them and how it all began I can see that wooden water towers make sense. The style and craftsmanship has changed remarkably little over the years.

Hi Bruce - The whole scene was really very NYC.  I was truly hunting for more "holiday" photos, but this is what presented itself - so you gotta go with it!

Hi Gail - I'm glad you like it since you are such an accomplished shutterbug yourself. I'm doing more and more evening photography these days for the reasons sighted above.   Its also a good time of year to do that....you don't have to stay out that late to get a good sunset and dusk is so early right now.

Ruthmare,

First of all you framing and lighting in that picture is perfect.  Focusing on the water tower makes a great story.  I saw many on building when I was growning up in Philadelphia.  Thanks for the history lession.

Hi Grant - Thanks - To be honest, I had been curious about them for a long time.  The water towers seemed so quaint in light of the elegant architecture that is Manhattan.  So I wondered about them and why they were all so much alike.  There was a uniformity that also had me curious.   THe photo presented itself while I was looking up trying to capture the light that was left as the sun set.  The garden also really made it work.  Both the tower and a roof garden are so typical of the city.
