Big Spring Park Outdoor Ice Skating Huntsville Alabama 2012

I arrived at the Big Spring Park Outdoor Ice Skating rink earlier this morning before the rink was opened. Some people had arrived and were walking the grounds, visiting the Christmas tree walk and waiting for their chance to slide on the ice.

While ice skating is not necessarily new to Huntsville Alabama, outdoor ice skating is a new attraction on the grounds of the Huntsville Museum of Art in Big Spring Park.  Huntsville does have an indoor ice rink; The Benton H. Wilcoxon Ice Complex, but the new outdoor rink in Big Spring Park opened for business on Wednesday, November 21st 2012 with the promise of something new and different to do in Huntsville and will operate through January 5th, 2013.  Admission is $10 and $3 skate rentals.  Hours of operation are Mon.-Thurs. 12-10 pm. Friday 12 to midnight, Saturday, 10 to midnight, Sunday 12-8 pm.

Map of Big Spring Park

I used to ice skate when I was younger and in Illinois the skating season could last into April or May depending on the weather.  I'm a little disappointed that the Big Spring Rink will close on January 5th because there's still some cool weather here to take advantage.  Next year that may change if demand increases.

Looks like a fun thing to do outside in the winter months.  Waiting for the pond near me to freeze so I can skate.

Nick I have not been to a skating rink in a hundred years, hence my question of the price of admission and the whole package, is that in line? or is it a bit ambitiously priced?

Is it cold enough outdoors in Alabama for ice skating?  I'm confused, but that's not hard to do Nick!

Nick, I use to love to ice skate....and ice skating outside where it is warm would be great not to have to wear a coat.

Nick, I remember the first couple of times I tried to skate, I froze because my pants got so wet from my tumbles

I didn't realize that it was cold enough there to have an outdoor skating rink! It hasn't been cold enough here yet for our outdoor rinks to open. Perhaps in January....

I hope you dig out your skates and take part in the fun!

While growing up in the midwest, I use to do a lot of ice skating. Not so much anymore. It hurts too much when I fall.

Kevin-I really enjoyed skating outdoors when I was younger...nice break from organized indoor rinks.

Endre-100 years???'re holding up pretty well :)  Actually I think it's reasonably priced for a temporary attraction.

Roger-yeah I know what you mean about being easily confused, anyway there is a mechanical system in place to freeze the water...they actually set these temporary rinks up in the Bahamas!

Rebecca-temperature wise it's kind of like skating indoors.

Ed-I'm familiar with that concept.

George-because I was carrying a very expensive camera...although a video probably would have made a great comedy short!'s not cold enough here we have to use a system to freeze the water.

John-I've seen other outdoor rinks like this and everyone seems to be having fun.  It kind of reminds me of the old movie "The Bishops Wife".

Debbie-me too and I've found that the older I get the falls seem harder...oh well.
