Today the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) held its annual Mardi Gras parade (Mystic Krewe of Mutts) to raise funds for the animal shelter. In downtown Baton Rouge, on North Boulevard, pet owners dressed up themselves and their dogs in the Mardi Gras spirit. The weather was great ... what a change from the cold rainy days ... the sun came out just in time !! Everyone had that happy Mardi Gras feeling. Even the dogs were very well behaved.
I was amazed at the number of people that brought their pets. A large crowd gathered to watch the dog parade and, of course, to catch some beads. The Cane's Chicken restaurant led the parade with their van, and they threw cute little labrador puppy stuffed animals that the kids loved. Right behind the van, I was helping to carry the CAAWS banner. My daughter and husband walked a shelter dog ... an adorable pit bull named Rosie who is looking for a home. All of the shelter dogs were wearing blue "jackets" with "CAAWS -- ADOPT ME" printed on them. Anyone interested in adopting a pet (cat or dog) can attend "Adoption Days" on Saturday afternoons at the CAAWS facility on Quinn Drive. It's very nice that the requirements for adoption are strict, for instance, the adopting family must have a fenced yard for the dog.
You may be thinking that we should adopt Rosie, however, with four dogs in our house already, there just isn't room for one more, much as we would love to take her. It was very sad for all of us to take her back to the shelter after the parade and say good-bye.
It was a memorable day. A lot of families with young children made some wonderful memories. We took over 200 photos and made some great memories of our own. Here is Sarah getting a great big sloppy kiss from Rosie.
