If you could send one Christmas card……

Christmas cardDalton Dingus is a 9 year old little boy in Salyersville, Kentucky.  Dalton has stage four cystic fibrosis.  Doctors sent him home from the hospital because they felt there was nothing more that they could do.

Each day is a precious gift.  Most of us take that for granted as we make plans for tomorrow, next week or next year.  Dalton looks forward to tomorrow and the Christmas cards that he will receive.

Dalton wishes to break a Christmas card record before he dies.  He has received around 100,000 cards from all over the world.

Social media is an amazing thing, let's use it for good.  I know that many of us do not send Christmas cards anymore.  It is easier to  post a “Merry Christmas everyone” on Facebook or send a mass text message.

If you could send one Christmas card this year, please help give this little boy something to look forward to.  Let's send prayers and well wishes to this brave young man.  Please send a card to Dalton.

Hey, just an FYI, there actually is no Guinness category for most Christmas cards received. Here is some additional info from www.urbanlegends.com.

Analysis: True. Local and national news reports confirm that 9-year-old Dalton Dingus of Salyersville, Kentucky is suffering from stage four cystic fibrosis and isn't expected to live through Christmas. His stated wish to break the Guinness world record for the most Christmas cards received went viral via Facebook in November, and as of December 14 he had collected nearly 100,000 cards, according to an update from his mother, Jessica Dingus.

The previous world record of 205,120 Christmas cards received was set in 1990 by 8-year-oldJarrod Booth, a terminally ill cancer patient from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. That record was unofficially broken 19 years later by Noah Biorkman, 6 years old, of South Lyon, Michigan, who received 1,175,752 Christmas cards from well-wishers before succumbing to cancer in November 2009.

According to Guinness spokesperson Jamie Panas no such records category is currently being monitored, but if a formal proposal is received from the Dingus family Guinness will consider re-opening it.

This report would not be complete without mention of Craig Shergold, a British lad who was the subject of a similar viral campaign after being diagnosed with brain cancer in 1989. In two years' time he received a record 30 million get-well cards, not to mention the attention of a wealthy benefactor who arranged for a surgical procedure to remove his brain tumor. He was completely cured, but the chain letter claiming he was at death's door lived on. By 2001, twelve years after the campaign started, Shergold had received an estimated 350 million get-well cards, and bags of them were still being delivered daily despite his and his family's pleas for people to stop mailing them. They're probably still coming in to this day.

Christine, that's an interesting back story that Michelle #1 commented and it sounds like Dalton has a long way to go, but I'll also send him a card.

Hi Michelle,

Yes, I know there is no official record for the Christmas cards.  Guinness told the family to submit paperwork to start a category.  I realize that this little boy may never break any record as he is not expected to survive past Christmas.

I'm sending a card because that little boy is looking forward to these cards.  It is what has been keeping him going.  If it take his mind off his troubles and makes his passing a little easier......it is well worth it :)

Thanks Michelle, let's spread the word!

Thanks Bob and Leilani!  Every card helps :)

Thanks Nick, I'm sure it will brighten his holiday!

This little boy had a wish for the most Christmas cards.  Word was not getting out.  They live in a rural Kentucky town.  Social media is helping to spread the word.  :)
