Do You Smell Something?

By

Electrical box, Do You Smell Smoke?Do You Smell Something?  Smoke Can be a terrifying smell when you recognize it's in your home!

One of my relatives learned, older home electrical circuits were not designed to handle the load of todays appliances.

Homes can look perfect from the surface.  They can have all the cosmetic advantages of vinyl siding, updated windows and insulation.  Behind those nicely decorated walls and floors can be a hidden terror ready to strike at any time.

Electrical services coming into older homes were fine for the years when the home was built.  Most homes have far more electronics and cooking updates than those of homes in the 1950's, constructed just after world War II.

In the case of my in-laws their home of 50 years has everything updated and looks like "House Beautiful".  I never gave the electrical service a thought.  They didn't either.

Their microwave decided to give up the ghost and quit, after 25 years of humming service.  Of course our lives can't live without a microwave, cell phone or voice mail.  They were at the local appliance dealer the next day.  Did they ever get a beauty.  The new microwave nestles under the kitchen cabinet just as cozy as the old one.  It has a few more buttons and heats food in seconds.

With the old one out and the new one in place, the installer says, "let's give it a try.  Do you have anything I can heat?"

Everyone is all smiles, they punch a few buttons and quiet as a mouse the plate inside twirls to give a new meaning to even heat!  Half way through the heat cycle the installer says, "do you smell something?"  The verbal thought was quickly dismissed as a first time use of the unit and a combination of the pie being heated as a reward for the installers great job.

Ding chimes the finish of the heating cycle and the pie is ready for whipped cream.  The installer says one more, "Do You Smell Something?"  He then questions the in-laws on where is the electrical box.  They show him and the small vision of smoke comes into view as they approach the area of the box.

The original electrical box with 60 amp service coming into the home.  For those of you that do not know, today's modern homes have a minimum of 100 amp services.  This one is only 40% shy of that benchmark.

The keen smell of an appliance installer caught a potential fire hazard before it happened.  He enjoyed his pie, they all laughed and unplugged the microwave until an electrician could be called.  The appliance installer said to them, don't use any of your electrical appliances until someone looks at that electrical panel.

Do you think they will ever buy any appliances anywhere else?  I think not.  Service is going the extra mile and your reward...pie of course!

Just as an update, the electrician came.  Move a couple of the circuit breakers and the box caught fire!  It was quickly extinguished and $800.00 later the home has a new electrical panel and meets today's code.

Holidays Bring added electrical use, cooking, lights and family.  Make sure your electrical service can handle the extra load and added power use.  Use home safety as your guide, have your electrical checked if you are unsure.  Time weakens systems and circuit breakers.  Call a licensed electrician.

Hi Tamara, so right you are, things could have been much worse.  I thought this might be a helpful reminder at the holidays.  Safety first especially with added stain on electrical systems.

Thanks for the comment Tamara, have a Great Holiday Season!

Gary, This happens more often than we can imagine!  I, also, notice the smell of natural gas in vacant homes and alert the listing agent.  Sometimes it just a valve that needs tightening, but, get the professional in there!  Thank you for the reminder!

It is imperative that people upgrade outdated electrical equipment - if they cannot or will not, they need to be careful what they are plugging in!

This is a good reminder that older homes should have the electrical updated for the way we use electronics today.

Sixty amps is ancient! I'm surprised that they did not have trouble sooner.

Gary-I'd say that technician earned his pie. I think some would have dismissed the smell and moved on to the next job. Glad for your folks they worked with a good guy.

Hi Francis, I am sure you are right about this happening more than we realize.  I too have been in many homes that have the distinctive smell of natural gas.  Thanks for the Comments Francis.

Hi Fred, this situation brought home the fact that people do not realize that older homes may not have a larger electrical service to handle todays appliances.  Thanks for the comments Fred.

Hi Joan, hope all is well with you.  Thanks for your comments, this could have been a more dangerous reminder like it is this time every year with home fires.

Hi Tigard, not quite ancient, but certainly antique!  Many people do not think of their electrical service until they have a problem.  Thanks for your comments Tigard.

Hi Grant, it should be a reminder to make sure you suggest to buyers get a home inspection, if they are your clients. Thanks for the comments Grant.

Hi Wayne, hope all is well with you.  I thought the same think, you are exactly right a different installer and they could have had a much different result.  They sent him a gift card for Christmas as a gesture of their apppreciation.  Thanks for the comments Wayne.

Hi Gary, Happy Holiday's, Federal Pacific, I am not even sure you can get breakers to fit those anymore!  It certainly was an eye opener to have this hit so close to home just before the holidays.  It might have changed going to Grandma's house for dinner!  Thanks for the comments Gary.

Thank you all for your comments, Have a Great Holiday Season.

Gary, this is great advice to anyone living in an older home.  You have to be so careful with electricity and it's not something your average homeowner should mess with - leave electricity to the experts!!

Amazing this built in alarm system in the shape of a human nose...Now, if we just learn listen to it when it alarms us.

Gary, good information! We had a new microwave installed above our stove. It required a dedicated circuit and expansion of our electrical panel. The electricians bill was more than the microwave.

Wow, 60 amps! I cringe when I see 100. Upgrades in our area are usually a minimum of 200 these days. Your in-laws were very lucky the installer caught the problem in time.

Hi Donald, it is a forgotten issue, home wiring unless a circuit breaker trips and the power goes out.  Then we investigate.  Thanks for the comments Donald.

Hi June, hope all is well with you, leaving these types of electrical upgrades to professionals is more than important, it could mean the difference in life and death.  The factor to note is, if a fire is caused by an unlicensed upgrade the insurance company may not pay the claim.  Have a great holiday season June, thanks for the comments.

Hi Richie, my alarm system isn't as sensitive as it should be but common sense may not be so common during the holidays.  Nice analogy too.  Thanks for the comment Richie.

Hi Michael, thier bill for the upgrade was more than the mircowave too!  Worth every penny once the real problem was discovered.  The hidden dangers lurking in homes is usually the occupant not considering the obvious.  The old saying, "if it isn't broke don't fix it" applies.  Thanks for your comments Michael.

Hi Olga, yes my head did the same as yours...WOW 60 amps!.  I have a 200 amp service and wonder if it is enough. All I have is computers and an electric guitar hooked up!  The amp is BIG though. :-)  Thanks for the comments Olga.

Thank You All for the comments.  Have a Safe and Wonderful Holiday Season.

Glad everything worked out and what a good head's up to the rest of us. I once smelled and saw smoke coming from a lighting fixture at an old building I was working in. I called my dad who was the local fire chief. He came right over and a fire was just starting in the wall. It was put out promptly with no harm done.

Gary because of situations like this, some insurance now do a physical inspection  of elctrical boxes before issuing a policy.  I suppose too many fire claims due to older wiring.  So if the electricity have not been upgrade getting a policy might be impossible.

Hi Erica, I could write a whole new episode on a story like that!  Truth is we have melted a few things ourselves.  Thanks for the comments Erica.  Have a Great Holiday Season.

Hi Gretchen, that could have been much worse.  I have had light pop and fixture buzz, fallen through steps, down steps but haven't started a fire yet.  I must admit there were times I felt the structure might burn down any second if it wasn't for the lack of power!  Thanks for the comments Gretchen.  Happy Holidays.

Hi Jennifer, Nice videos you have been posting on Youtube and your site.  It makes sense that insurance companies would start looking at issues like electrical panels.  Especially in areas where homes are older structures.  We all know if it isn't broke don't fix it!  Thanks for the comment Jennifer.  Have a Happy Holiday season.

Thank You all for taking the time to post a comment.
