Albert Einstein said, “make life as simple as you can, but not simpler.”

Kate Wilson sent out this blog on Friday which I felt appropriate to forward to all of you. Thank you all very much for your support and continued partnership leading into 2013.  Have a great Holiday and wonderful New Year!!!!

Simple as 1-2-3 (maybe)I don’t know about you, but we are finishing really strong this year. It’s been an amazingly busy year. It feels as though we turned the corner going about 105MPH and the accelerator stuck.   In coaching sessions this week, nearly everyone was grateful for the business but looking for a way to get a little more life in along the way.

2013 for us is well under way and it doesn’t look like there is a slow down in sight.

We already have closings lined up all of the way through April and it isn’t even Christmas yet!

I am privileged to work with a lot of over achievers.  Delegation is not a word in their vocabulary and they very often believe they are the only one that can do whatever the task is that is before them.  They are always overly optimistic about what they can get done in the time they have or about how much time it takes to get done what needs to be done. That being the case, they find themselves working until 10PM every night or forfeiting personal time to catch up before the next week starts again.  That’s no fun and no way to live.

I

f you find yourself at this point, it may be time to press the pause button and consider your options. As I see it, there are two choices if you want to hang on to your momentum into 2013. You can become more efficient with your time or, if you are as efficient as you can be, trade some of your money for someone else’s time. Albert Einstein said, “make life as simple as you can, but not simpler.”   There is a certain amount of stuff that just has to get done and a belief that it’s faster to do it yourself than show someone else how to do it. There does come a point, however, that no matter how fast or how well you can do it, there’s just too much to do.  On the other hand, most of us just do too much non-essential stuff and claim that we are being as efficient as we can be with our time.

My encouragement to my coaching clients  was to take out a 3 by 5 card and put their top goals for life on side one and their top goals for business on side two. Reflect. You work to live and not the other way around. Side one is inextricably tied to side two. If there are 3 things on the business side that can only be done by you, and in doing them you are most likely to produce the financial fruit needed to live out your personal goals, what are they? Do those without fail. Most likely everything else can be delegated. State your  personal goals in a very specific, passionate and actionable way so they will compel you to stop trading time on side two for side one. If you’re in sales, sell. Much of the other stuff is fluff. If you want a better relationship with your spouse, put a weekly date night on your calendar and don’t trade it for an opportunity to work.

My coach, Daniel Harkavy, likened priorities to balls made of glass and balls made of rubber and life as a juggling act. The glass balls are your top priorities like taking care of your health or prospecting for new business. Glass balls break when they fall.   The other ones, while important, are the rubber balls. If you drop one once in a while, they bounce.  During this holiday season, why not take a little time to reflect on how you can put a little more life into the equation in 2013.   –
