Recycling the learning curve.

Recycling the learning curve by Richard WeisserI play the guitar, and I always play from memory.

That makes playing holiday music very interesting. It’s mostly the same songs year after year, but I haven’t played them in eleven months. So I have to learn them all over again before a performance.

For the most part, the songs come back very easily, but others require a little extra thought and practice. And there are those less familiar tunes that I almost have to learn from scratch.

The same process thought applies to almost any endeavor. There are many skills that we have learned in the past and not used for some time that may need a little refresher course before we implement them again.

Just because we did something proficiently in the past does NOT mean that we are equipped to do it again. The old expression “use it or lose it” come to mind.

The learning curve is more like a jagged saw tooth.

And it needs sharpening every now and then.

Richard - I got a laugh from your post! I own 3 guitars and have never been proficient with any of them...I guess my saw is a bit dented and rusted when it comes to this. I am not sure this saw can ever be saved! Thanks for the post and have a great holiday season!

What an awesome talent to be able to play without music!!  I intend to polish a few "lost skills" early in the new year...! In the meantime: Happy Playing & Merry Holidays!

Richard, Public speaking is the one for me. We I do it often it isn't hard but when a few months go by then it is like starting over.

Thank goodness that most of those songs are very simple and easy to play. .

I will be playing them on Sunday Night with my family. .

Richard, this is so true. I've found songs I learned several years ago just flow, but songs I've learned in recent months seem to evade my short term memory. "Use ir or lose it" applies to a lot of things. Excuse me while I go and practice some more.

Peter...

Why not try a few Christmas carols? It might be fun! TYVM.

Brenda...

Many songs follow similar patterns, but oddly enough some of the holiday somgs are pretty tricky! Thanks so much.

Debbie...

Isn't that the truth. Fact is, playing in public has made speaking a lot easier for me. After all, it is still just a performance! Thanks my friend.

Fernando...

"The Christmas Song" chord progressions always demand some run-throughs for me. Thanks so much.

Michael...

It seems that we both need a lot more practice as we get older. Thanks for jumping in!

Richard, I really got a good laugh out of this. There are things I do over and over again, then I have a bit of a break from it, and ouch... I can't remember or just plain fudge my way through.

Drives me nutty (er).....

Absolutely!  I stopped playing bridge over the summer last year and then started up again - it was literally like starting all over.  Where had all that memory gone??

I love to sing! I have an ear for tone. So if I can sing in the same pitch as an artist I can mimic them precisely.

Richard,  I play as well and can relate well on both fronts.  We have to constantly hone our skill even those we think are planted in memory.  Whats the saying "Use it or loose it"  sometimes a refresher is all that's needed.

I envy your musical ability.  I imagine one of these days I will endeavor to learn an instrument.  And like everything in life, if you don't practice the skill, you lose it.
