I play the guitar, and I always play from memory.
That makes playing holiday music very interesting. It’s mostly the same songs year after year, but I haven’t played them in eleven months. So I have to learn them all over again before a performance.
For the most part, the songs come back very easily, but others require a little extra thought and practice. And there are those less familiar tunes that I almost have to learn from scratch.
The same process thought applies to almost any endeavor. There are many skills that we have learned in the past and not used for some time that may need a little refresher course before we implement them again.
Just because we did something proficiently in the past does NOT mean that we are equipped to do it again. The old expression “use it or lose it” come to mind.
The learning curve is more like a jagged saw tooth.
And it needs sharpening every now and then.
