older person being treated for common coldSurprise, it's "cold season!"  Here is good advice for preventing the common cold, reducing symptoms and accelerating recovery.

Overall, though, the bottom line appears to be get plenty balanced nutrition, take time off and get rest, stay warm, and find your thyme and ginger and get cooking.

The generally well-regarded source WebMD suggests:

  • Chicken soup really is effective (even better if Mom delivers it).
  • Ginger helps settle the stomach
  • Dark greens are loaded with vitamins
  • Salmon is anti-inflammatory
  • Overall nourishment is effective for helping the immune system.
NPR's "The Peoples' Pharmacy' (much more commercial than NPR)  advises that Thyme helps ease the coughing.

The Federal National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says some forms of Zinc "helps to reduce the length and severity of the common cold in healthy people when taken within 24 hours after symptoms start."  However, they also warn of side effects and hazards of nasal treatment.

But here is my favorite.  Fix some really strong ginger tea, a really hot bath, then go drink all the tea and soak in hot water for 30 minutes, then go to bed and stay warm.  Wow.  Just like Mom used to say.
