This is the 6th installment of GaGa for Google +. Sorry guys...I'm a day late on this one (very busy week...hope you will forgive me). Every week I'm going to provide some weekly tips and a few key people to follow on Google +. We are trying to help the Active Rain Community acclimate to Google + because there is huge synergy in combining Active Rain and Google +. This is not an "either...or" but a "both" strategy.
This week's tip is a do and a don't:
Do post to Public. I've mentioned this before, but it's so important that I'm going to mention this again. Don't just post to your circles...if you do, only your circles will see it; google will not index it and hence the public will not see it, and it does nothing for your SEO/authorship. (Now, there may be some times where you want something private or to a select group, and then that's okay). But, if you are trying to leverage the power of google, post to Public
Do not select "email your post" to your circles. If you do this, you will really annoy most of your followers. Many will give you the benefit of the doubt if you do this once by mistake or it you only do it once in a while (e.g. once every 100 or 200 posts). But other than that, it is spammy, and people get annoyed and will either unfollow you or mute you (and yes, I have done this to people). If you simply post to public, you will not offend or annoy anyone and then your followers can see it in their stream and choose to comment, if they like. Also, if there are specific people that you want to read the post, you can mention them in the body of the post w/ a + before their name, so that their profile shows up.
Oh, and while I'm on the topic of spam and things you shouldn't do, check out Bill Gassett's post on "Real Estate Social media fails" where he goes through each of the main social media channels and points out what you shouldn't do (but many people are doing). It's a wonderful post, and he has clearly stuck a chord...He has 180 comments, 18 shares and 64 plusses. Way to go Bill in expressing what has annoyed so many people. Even if you don't use Google Plus, read this...you'll get some good tips for FB, Tw, Zillow/Trulia, etc.
Who to follow:
Each week, I'm going to highlight a few Active Rainers. While my focus on here will be to connect you w/ some great Active Rainers in a new setting, I'm also going to try to expose you to some others that are "doing things right."
And, for others using Google +, please feel free to reblog this and/or create your own version, as well as leave a link to your profile in the comments.
Kathy Nielsen - Kathy Nielsen is one of our expert stagers who has quickly become a master on Google Plus. She even knows how to get her photos right on here! She has a great way of interspersing humor and drama into her posts.
Julie Bentley - Julie has joined on Google Plus and I have to say this is how I've gotten to know her better. She has such a great attitude and is a very quick study. When she sees a great post, she spreads the word by sharing. She is Very upbeat, too.
Debbie McCormack - She is definitely John McCormack's better half (Kidding John). She's always posting fun photos and always has kind words to share. Sounds like John made an excellent choice. (and vice versa).
Neal Schaffer - Neal is a social media consultant and really has great advice. In particular, you should read his posts about LinkedIn. He is always sharing great articles and advice on social media. Great info.
Joshua Berg - Joshua Berg is a realtor, investor and internet marketer...and someone who is not on Active Rain. (always good to have a new perspective). I don't know how he found "us."...probably from Bill Gassett who seems to know everybody...or find everybody...or everyone finds him. Joshua has had some really great insight on social media and how to use (and how not to). He gets it.
