“Foodie” Fridays in Austin

Dories picks 12-21-12

We are down to the wire – Christmas is just 3 days away! Going to be doing some last minute shopping? How about getting a sitter so you can stop for dinner before heading home; and enjoy a glass of wine, a relaxing meal and take in the holiday atmosphere.  Here are 3 restaurants for you to consider each located near a shopping area: one near Lakeline Mall, one in the Arboretum and one near the 1890 Ranch shopping area in neighboring Cedar Park.

1.      TEXAS LAND AND CATTLE

http://www.texaslandcattle.com/files/home.aspx
If you haven’t been to a Texas Land and Cattle restaurant yet, they are reminiscent of an authentic Texas ranch house with large fireplaces and hand-peeled split logs.  They feature a selection of high quality mesquite-grilled steaks, chicken, ribs, fish and more.  The portions are generously sized with a variety of appetizers and desserts; and of course a full bar.  On the menu: Signature Smoked Sirloin Sliders: thinly sliced smoked sirloin piled high with horseradish Dijon sauce and sweet onion-bacon jam; or House Made Crab Cakes: three hand breaded crab cakes lightly fried and served with ancho aioli.  Maybe you’ll feel like having a combo: garlic steak and shrimp which is USDA choice sirloin topped with roasted garlic butter paired with four shrimp served with a veggie or the TXLC trio – the USDA choice sirloin, 4 hand breaded shrimp and a mesquite-grilled BBQ chicken breast served with southwestern rice. And, of course you can’t leave without dessert.  The special item on the dessert menu is their triple chocolate miracle cake: buy a slice of that cake and the proceeds will go to the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

2.      BRIOS TUSCAN GRILLE

http://www.brioitalian.com/index.html
Brio means “lively or full of life” and that’s what Brio brings: the pleasure of the Tuscan country villa to the American city.  The Tuscan philosophy of food is “to eat well is to live well” and living true to that philosophy the food is simply prepared and they use only the finest and freshest ingredients.  You might want to try the Pasta Brio: rigatoni, grilled chicken, seared mushrooms in a roasted red pepper sauce; or the Penne Mediterranean: mushrooms, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, Feta & pine nuts mixed with penne pasta.  Looking for meat instead?  Try the Tuscan Grilled Pork Chops: center-cut marinated in-house and seared on the grill served with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables; or the Filetto Di Romano: a 5 ounce filet grilled to order with a romano crusted tomato, mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables.  My suggestion for dessert: The Brio Sampler called The Dolchinos, an assortment of petite desserts including strawberry cheesecake, chocolate mousse and tiramisu.  If the weather is nice, enjoy your meal or have a drink outside by the fireplace while relaxing on one of their outdoor sofas.

 3.      LONGHORN STEAK HOUSE

http://www.longhornsteakhouse.com/
The Longhorn Steak House has a passion for grilling with its inspiration coming from the American West.  You are welcomed into a relaxing atmosphere that will remind you of a Western rancher’s home.  Longhorn is well known for showcasing fresh, never frozen steaks like their signature steak: Flo’s Filet and the bone-in Outlaw Ribeye.   If meat is not what you’re craving, there’s more on the menu besides steaks. You could try some of their grilled fresh fish and fresh chicken.  Or perhaps one of their specialties: Longhorn Salmon: a fresh hand cut salmon seasoned with a bourbon marmalade or tender Baby Back Ribs that are ready to fall off the bone or the Parmesan Crusted Chicken: 2 chicken breasts that are grilled and topped with parmesan cheese and have a garlic crust.  For dessert they have a shareable sampler: Chocolate Stampede, Caramel Apple Goldrush and Mountain Top Cheesecake….sure to please.
