Where is the Line to See Jesus?
I attended my granddaughter’s Christmas pageant last night, and the children from her second grade class sang the song, Where’s the Line to See Jesus? Being a mediocre word-smith myself, hearing something catchy like that peaks my curiosity. I couldn’t wait to get on my computer and dig into the story of how the song came to be written.
Inspired by grandson, Spencer Reigers, the song was written and performed by father and daughter, Steve Haupt and Becky Kelly. It seems that little 4 year old Spencer was at the mall and saw all the children lined up to see Santa…and he asked his mother where was Jesus? I think that is what is so magical about children, they have a way of seeing the world without adult sophistication…and therefore, they see the true meaning and message of God.
As I sat in my chair and watched little Casey on that stage, all dressed up in white in her angel costume, I couldn’t help but think of a school building in Connecticut, having a much different and difficult Christmas.
Our country, and really the entire world, has been transfixed by the details of that black Friday a week ago. We have all been touched by the stories of the children. We have been inspired by the heroism of the teachers and staff. Unfortunately, we have also come to know the killer’s story. Somehow, I wish there were a way to not identify the killer. Don’t show his face, don’t mention his name, and don’t tell his story. We can talk all we want about beefing up school security or having some sort of gun control…but to the twisted mind of a killer, it is the notoriety they seek. Taking away their infamy may be the only way to stop them. Let them meet their Maker anonymously.
It is certainly a sad lesson for us all to learn, but we are finding that in the end, we just have each other. It is our humanity and our faith in God that causes us to shed a tear for a child and family we have never met. It is our good will for all mankind that makes us reflect on the pain and suffering of others, and wish we could take it all away.
I read an article today about a Catholic parish just a few minutes from the school. The priest spoke of the pews being filled with people praying, and that is a good sign. Sadly, many times people turn away from God when terrible things like happen…only to find out down the road, it is our faith in God that gives us the strength to face a new day. Maybe the Christmas message this year is this, with God, we can conquer death.
May God bless you, and watch over your family!
