1957, What a Year

In the history of recorded music, songs do not get much bigger than this one. The impact of this song,  how it and the artist who performed it influenced music for the next 50 years and beyond, is quite amazing. It was a real trend setter.

For seven weeks, in the fall and winter of 1957, this tune was #1 from downtown Manhattan to Alcatraz Island. The smash hit was blasting out of AM car radios and, internationally, the artist had the first song to ever debut at #1 on the British charts. Ike was the President, back in the days when the country was less divided and a President could actually be popular, and nobody had yet heard of the Beatles. They were still just kids.

The performer of this smash hit is now a legend. The song was incorporated into the artist's third full length movie and the scene, which was choreographed by the artist himself, is the best known of any of the production numbers to appear in the artist's numerous movies. If you are guessing on this one, not sure of the artist or the song, simply click on Alcatraz Island, below, to be transported back to the year 1957.

The name to remember when you want it done right.

That's the year I was born, but I do remember seeing those cars and Of course listening to jailhouse rock. I think my wife may still have it on a 45.

I was pretty sure about that one, but clicked anyway.  And 1953 was a far better year for so many reasons!

Elvis was so handsome and so entertaining.  I love seeing him when he was young.  Have fun in Mexico.

Steve, I was just turning 13 in 1957.  Just getting ready to hit the ninth grade in high school.  I remember the song like it was yesterday.  But then again, 1957 seems like it was yesterday.

I believe the care... on of my favorites... was the 1956 Chevy.  Actually, back then, I liked the 1956 Ford even better.  Gawsh... where did the time go?
