Breaking Away From The Herd...High Wire Ranch, Hotchkiss, Colorado. High Wire Ranch isn't your typical Western Colorado Ranch. The owners of High Wire Ranch have broken out of the traditional western ranch stereotype. The main herds at the ranch are Elk and Buffalo.
It's so neat to just drive by this ranch and see all the elk and bison. In the fall the elk are sporting their large racks (antlers) and it's really something to see. The day I took this picture, the Elk were at the other end of the ranch.
Dave and Sue Whittlesey own High Wire Ranch and have been raising buffalo since 1981 and elk since 1987. Dave and Sue are no strangers to ranching and have worked really hard to get their ranch off the ground. You can find out more about the Whittleseys here. All of the animals are grass fed and no hormones or antibiotics are used...so the meat is all natural. And pretty tasty, too. I use to do the Cedaredge Farmer's Market with Dave and Sue many years ago. The Whittleseys have been featured in Sunset Magazine and Eating Well Magazine. The meat is shipped all over the country.
