The best presents during the holiday season --- the gift of heart and time
During this time of the year, it can be nerve-wracking to come up with ideas for the perfect gifts for people.
Some of us don’t like the hustle-bustle of going to the malls or don’t relish going out in inclement weather just to shop. We prefer shopping on-line and have the presents delivered directly to our intended recipients.
While it’s wet and cold outside, we are keeping warm at home, under heavy covers, sipping hot cider or hot chocolate.
But gift-giving this year has taken on a different meaning for so many.
The devastation wrought by natural disasters throughout the world
The evil that took away innocent lives in Connecticut
And closer to home, the frightening and life-threatening illness that struck a college friend just after we enjoyed dinner after Thanksgiving. It is literally a life or limb situation.
Life is fragile and fleeting, indeed.
So in lieu of presents, we are instead choosing to donate time and funds to
...International Red Cross for global reach
….Meals on Wheels
...local animal shelters or the ASPCA
...and other charitable organizations.
It doesn’t take much.....but we are more generous and put more money and more often in the kettle as we pass a Salvation Army volunteer ringing the bells.
Most importantly, we are promising to give the gift of precious time to people we love and cherish.
As my Dad said, “I don’t need another shirt....I just need you to spend time with me.”
Give your heart and your time. It can make a world of difference!
