Tsunami’s in Baton Rouge

After looking at all the pizza boxes stuffed in the trash, I realized that it was time for a change. I’m not implying that I’m a pizza junkie; I’m just saying that I have Papa Johns on speed dial. That’s our little secret, though. I must admit, I was to the point of sweating pepperoni from my pours so it was time for something new, something different and something tasty. I resisted the urge to dial Papa and ended up phoning a friend to discuss. We tossed a few ideas around and we decided on sushi and by “we”, I mean “she”…because I’m not a sushi eater. I can remember trying it years ago and not being a big fan but I’m not the type to say “I’ll never eat that again”. Well, I do say that but I usually end up eating my words. All of my friends wanted to head downtown and if you are familiar with Baton Rouge…sushi + downtown= Tsunami’s. I had never been to Tsunami’s before so I was pretty pumped up about trying it out. After everyone met up at my house, we all headed downtown on our downtown sushi adventure.

I love going downtown. Downtown Baton Rouge has changed so much over the past several years and it’s just fabulous. There’s just something about the atmosphere that’s appealing. I’m thinking that it’s probably the scenery, walking along peeking in business windows, hearing music, passing others who are enjoying the day, seeing all the architecture, good food and did I miss anything? Sundays are the best days to spend downtown. A lot of times they usually have things going on that involve music, food and entertainment…this is what I live for.

When we arrived downtown, we all made the pleasant walk toward Tsunami’s. I had no idea that it was on the 23 floor, thank goodness I didn’t get a nose bleed. As we went up the elevator, I have to say that I was a wee bit excited. I always get that way with new places, especially when I have no idea what to expect. The doors open and we stepped out into Tsunami’s. Immediately, I liked the vibe…there was something modern about it and chic. The hostess greeted us before informing us that there was a two hour way…say what? She handed us a beeper and we were stunned. We didn’t get the memo about making reservations.

With the pager in my pocket, I walked through Tsunami’s to see the layout. It was a pretty decent set up with a bar off to the side, followed by a seating area and when you walked past the hostess…you were greeted by the ‘packed’ dining area. Glancing at all the people, I saw a door leading outside…oh fun! I grabbed my friends and showed them the secret door; we walked toward it with curiosity and opened it with even more. Tsunami’s had what I would call, a rooftop balcony.

I think it would be safe to say that it was almost as big as or even bigger than the restaurant itself. There were luxury couches that allowed you to sit and enjoy the music that was playing. It was a wild view of Baton Rouge. I can’t remember being on the 23rd floor anywhere in Baton Rouge before…well, not where I could look across, over and down at the city. It was beautiful looking at all the landmarks, the lights, the U.S.S Kid and everything else within the eyes view in that area.

Yes, I know…two hours seems like an eternity but actually, it flew by like a bird with a jetpack on. When you’re given the opportunity to drink, listen to good music, take in great scenery while amongst friends…time slips away…and that it did. Soon, we were all headed to the dining area to become a part of the Tsunami family. Looking at the menu, I had no idea what I wanted to try but I was up for anything…well, almost anything. I don’t eat dog or hamsters.

The waitress suggested I try “Edamame”. I remember her trying to explain what Edamame was and I didn’t ‘get it’ so I just said I would try it. Listen, those damn beans…are they beans? They were delicious. Piggy over here had three orders of them and would have had more if she didn’t weren’t surrounded by people who love to count calories. In between Edamame bites, I took my time sipping on a Chocolate Martini. I had to control myself because I could have finished it off in one gulp but I tried to make it last but before long, I had to order another one and another one and another one. They had a Bailey’s taste to it and with the added chocolate, it was almost heaven. I finished the night off with their chicken teriyaki but didn’t eat much because by now, I had turned into one big Edamame and was giving the “Jolly Green Giant” a run for his money.

We were all stuffed and it was a good kind of stuffed. It was really one of those moments where I wanted to belt out, “Stick a fork in me, I’m done” but I was so stuffed I couldn’t even make an attempt to push out a lame joke. Overall, Tsunami’s was just lovely and I was so excited that I skipped over calling in for pizza. While I may never give up my pizza, nothing compares to the Edamame and Chocolate Martini’s at Tsunami’s…well, nothing except for more Edamame and chocolate martinis!
