A Helping Hand Church. Located on the corner of Academy and Madison Street in Clarksville TN, the First Christian Church not only takes care of the spiritual needs of its parishioners but it takes care of the hungry in the community.
Every Tuesday morning from 8-10AM, the church people give out 96 bags of groceries. They do this each and every week and the needy line up to get this weekly help. Over the entire year in 2011 they gave out 3818 bags of food. It will be interesting to hear the numbers for 2012. The church partners with Second Harvest Food Bank and some other food drives and organizations to be able to do this for the people of Clarksville. Now that is a Helping Hand Church.
In 1842 the church was founded and the first church building was built in 1851 in the historic downtown Clarksville area. This church building was erected in 1922 at its present location. Built of red bricks and some limestone accents and has a stately presence on church row.
The word is out that the needy can stop by on Tuesdays and receive a bag of food. No questions are asked but it is understood that only those in need should apply. Once a month on the fourth Tuesday the church people are required to get some additional information from the recipients to provide to the local food bank. This allows them to continue to get some help from these other resources.
This Helping Hand Church serves the City of Clarksville well and I am thankful that they do this needed work. First Christian Church has good people that care about the people of Clarksville and take action to help.
