Possum Drop 2013

It's not too late to come out to Tallapoosa for the Possum Drop.  Every New Years Eve, Spencer teh Possum gets dropped from the highest point on Head Ave., in his possum cage.

This year lots of vendors are set up, several businesses will be open, and the meet and greet will again feature local legend Rhubarb Jones of country music DJ fame.

If the possum drop is not your cup of tea, the West GA Mud Park in Tallapoosa will be having a fun time playing in the mud as they ring in the new year.

It's always a good time to go to Tallapoosa.

I have never heard of this one before, but my Mom is from Georgia, so I guess nothing would surprise me!

I'm guessing the possum is well protected otherwise PETA or some other organization would be all over this event.

Okay, now I've heard it all. I don't even want to ask how they actually drop the possum.

This just sounds wrong somehow? I'm assuming there is more to the story...but funny tradition and very small town. Love it

Karen, I read this last night right before heading home. I stopped for ice cream on the way, but almost ran over a possum driving down my street. First time I've seen one in my 'hood in the 8+ years I've been there. Weird.

Hi all - I tried to respond earlier, but could not log on.  Thanks for the comments, and I hope everyone has a great 2013!!!

Paula - An armadillo drop would be awesome!  Armadillos have come to GA and we call them possums on the half shell.

Jeanne - We are in the hillbilly part of GA, so anything can happen!

C J - A husband drop...what a novel idea, but only if we can drop them on their heads.

Cindy - Spencer the possum is actually a taxidermied possum.

Brian - It is cool, and it was cold.

Tammy - Spencer the possum is taxidermied.  He does have a nice cage though.

Joan - all the best to you!

Michael - Thanks for the good wishes, all the best to you too.

Richie - a local resturant serves possum drops on the menu. Tthey are delicious!

Karen - The possum is a taxidermy mount, so no real possum is involved.  In the 1800's legend has it that Tallapoosa was named possum snout after a local Native American Chief who had a nose like a possum snout.

Fernando - It's pretty tame.  The Mud Bog New Years Eve event is a different story...

Eric - That is weird.  Maybe he was going for ice cream too.

Okay, this is an interesting twist on an old tradition, but hey why not? As long as no one's getting hurt it's as good as anything else.

Hi Joy - Soencer, the possum drop possum, is a taxidermy mount.  So he was living at one time, but now he is just for display.  Rumor has it that he was a victim of a traffic accident.
